re insert rule

Player A comes out and player B inserted, I then re-insert player A. I was always led to think player B is burnt for the game. Playing this fall a coach was allowed to re-insert player B. And the logic was anyone can be re-inserted once. Sounded right to me but i wanted to confirm it. Is everyone (even subs) allowed to be re-inserted? I would be asking for ASA or USSSA rule sets.

Cant speak for the USSSA rule set, but under both FED and ASA every player has 1 reentry.

This actually came up in a HS JV game here last season ... I re-entered player 'B' and the other teams Coach argued, as you thought, that only Player 'A' was allowed re-entry and that player 'B' was burnt ... Neither Blue, a 'newb' and a '2nd year' knew the rule and ruled in the other Coaches favor ... I had to pull out the book during the game ... NSA has the same re-entry, not sure about U-trip ...

There are only three rules governing substitution and few coaches have a working knowledge of even two of the three. Good for you that your trying to learn them. DP/Flex has a lot of permutations and takes a while to master, but Courtesy Runners and Re-entry aren't that complicated. I've worked with plenty of coaches who have been in the game for years that didn't understand that you could reenter a player (or who they could reenter for) and thought that using someone as a CR burnt them as a sub.

Thank you! The re-entry really seems pretty straight forward NOW. And my guess is once player B is put in, Player B and Player A are tied together the rest of the game?
I know there are a bunch of rules with the DP/Flex those rules start to confuse me. LOL.

A and B are not tied to each other, they are both tied to the spot in the lineup that A started the game in.

So if A is batting 4th, when B subs for A, B is now batting 4th and A can reenter at the 4th spot later. You could sub C for B, then C would be batting 4th. You could still re-enter A to the 4th spot in the lineup because she is tied to that spot, not to player B.

Re-entry is a great way to get a fast kid to run the bases for a slow kid that has managed to get on base, but still be able to bring the starter back defensively once. If you have a deep bench(and some good hitting but slow starting fielders) I'd suggest doing this early rather than waiting for them to get on base in the bottom of the 7th. Better to be up a couple runs because of good baserunning in the early innings, rather than saving your subs to the last minute.

That would be NCAA. As others have pointed out, in ASA, everyone gets one re-entry. A starter and her substitute(s) are tied to the spot in the batting order.

Courtesy runner question.
Top 1st inning. I use P1 as a courtesy runner for my pitcher.
Can I use P1 as a substitute for another player in the bottom of the 1st inning?

As long as its not the same 1/2 inning they were the courtesy runner, yes you can use them as a substitute.
