Dropped 3rd Strike

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by bcc69 » Tue Dec 14, 2010 12:23 pm

This is the scenerio: 1 out, runner on 1st. Batter strikes out, and the catcher doesn't hold on the the ball. Batter starts running to 1B, and the catcher makes a play to 1B. The runner on 1B goes to 2B.

Does the original runner on 1B have to go back to firstbase, since there it was not a dropped third strike situation?

No, the runner does not have to go back. Catcher should know the situation before the pitch is thrown. Not sure how it would be scored. My guess would be E-2. :?

Runners advance with liability of being thrown out ... If the Backstop has a play, the correct throw would have been to 2nd base in this scenario ... I've seen umpires score your scenario DMC ...

EDIT: It is often best to name the ' ruleset ' you are playing under to get a correct ruling ... I don't know of any, but there may be certain lower age REC divisions where advancing on a phantom D3K is not allowed ...

Scored as:
Stolen base for runner at first going to 2nd.
Batter out. Drop 3rd does not exist when there is a runner at first and there is less than 2 outs.

Baserunner records stolen base and stays at 2B as a live runner.

Pitcher records strikeout.

Catcher (and parents in the stands) learn a lesson that we all have experienced at one point in our careers.

The runner would not get credit for a stolen base unless she was running on the pitch.

This was during a 10U ASA game. Thus the confusion

Correct - if she wasn't running on the pitch, it would most likely be either a passed ball or wild pitch. The scorekeeper might also rule it a fielder's choice if they think the catcher could of thrown out the base runner at 2nd.

Then why would she be advancing? There is no force on a DTS.

She gets a stolen base in my book.

Why? Because I do not care enough to obsess over details.

Was there a passed ball? It does not sound like it.

Was there a wild pitch? It does not sound like it.

I suppose I could call it and E2, with the runner advancing on the Catchers mental error.

I just hope it was my daughter on first so I can pad her stats and talk up her phenomenal base stealing prowess.

At least we all agree that the runner does not go back to first, regardless if this is 10U Rec or 18U Gold.
