IF cause and effect.

Rule question? Get it answered here.

ASA rules, runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Routine fly ball between 3rd and SS. Of course lack of communication leads to ball dropping between them as they both look at each other. SS picks the ball up and runs to third and immediately fires the ball to two. The ball is overthrown and both runners score and the batter/runner has moved to second. Keeping in mind, the whole time this is going on, there is no call by either of the blues. After the play is over, the BU calls the runner on second out on an IF. BU goes on to explain to the defensive team, that ASA mechanics are to no longer call out IF, but rather to remain silent. He said the girl at third was safe because there was no force with the batter/runner being out.

Is this the "new" mechanic for ASA? I have a hard time believing that ASA is going to now expect young girls to be mind readers as to whether or not a blue has determined whether or not their's an IF in effect. Or did the BU just make up some BS story to cover for his partner, the PU who got caught with his pants down?

BTW, I can live with mistakes, they're going to happen, just don't try to BS your way thru it. If you screwed up, own up to it and lets move on.

1.Always look cool
2.Never get lost
3.If you get lost, look cool

BS! You have to call it.

Plate umpire should have said it wasnt catchable to cover his butt.

Batter is out and both runs score.

No, that is not a new mechanic. Ruling seems to be correct, but the excuse is weak. Yes, the umpire should verbalize the IF as soon as it is realized, preferably at the ball's apex. However, if the umpire does fail to verbalize, it does not negate the effect of the rule.

And "verbalize the call" - despite what most coaches think - does not mean the umpire is supposed to yell "infield fly" so people three states over can hear the call...
