The Umpire Corner

Blue's view?

Rule question? Get it answered here.

My DD is a slapper, and she crowds the plate for obvious reasons. She had an umpire tell her last weekend to move back off the plate, she was obstructing his view. I asked her if she was out of the box and she said no. She said she asked him if she was out of the box and he said no, but you need to move back because I can't see. Was this a one guy anomaly or does blue have the authority to tell her where she needs to be in the box?

Batter can choose any position in the box they want as long as they are actually in the box. It is the umpires responsibility to make adjustments to see the pitch.

Depending on how much your daughter is crowding the plate, she may not actually be in a legal starting position. There is an inside line to a batters box and the rules state the batters foot may be on the line, but no portion may extend beyond the line. By the dimensions in the rule book, toes should be no closer than 6" to the border of the plate.

As stated, she can be anywhere within the box. If she crowds the plate, she risks taking a hit-by-pitch strike.

Hmmm? So, when you have a back stop jumping up and blocking your view of the corner ... you may tell her she needs to stay down if she wants that call ... if you can't see it hit the corner you may call a ball instead of a strike ... So, with a slapper obstructing your view ???? Would you, or may another Blue instruct her to back off a little so he can see ?

As long as she's in a legal batting position, I woudn't say anything.

The batter has the right to that position and the umpire has the responsibility to adjust to it.

Hmmm? What do you do if they ignore your request?
So, if the catcher ignores you...you call every pitch a ball?

I was & am playing devils advocate   ... if you can't see a pitch catch the corner, can it hit the corner ? What say you ? ... Does it depend on who is obstructing your view of the corner ? Do you put the defense at a disadvantage because of the offense obstructing your view and visa versa ? ...

Most likely. If a catcher shifts or pops up while the pitch is in flight to the point of blocking my view, that is going to be a ball if there was no contact or attempt to hit it. I'm certainly not goin to give the benefit of any doubt to the team which caused the issue.

AFA the batter blocking you, don't see how that can happen without being hit by the ball. That doesn't mean it is going to be a strike if you cannot track the ball, but at some point, the catcher is going to receive that ball in front of you. If it is close, it is most likely going to be a strike.

Much like fielders who believe it is more important for them to get a good look at a ball down the line then it is for the umpire. Yeah, it looks fair....still fair...okay, hear comes the line....and it is.......WHAT THE HELL IS #17 DOING THERE?......fair ball is going to be the signal.

Coach: But blue, that ball landed 6" foul.
Umpire: May have coach, but I didn't see it land foul.
Coach: How could you miss that? What the hell did you see?
Umpire: I saw the #17 on the back of your third baseman. Last I had a visual on the ball, it was over fair territory, that makes it a fair ball.

Last year in a NFHS game ... I had an inexperienced back stop who was all over the place ... the only thing that she did often enough to establish any kind of pattern was letting the ball hit me ... :(
