No pitch, strike one???

Rule question? Get it answered here.

OK, what had happened was(lol) ; Coach subs in DP with 2 outs, bases loaded. The batter is ready, pitcher ready and Blue gives the go ahead to play ball. The coach yells something to the batter and she steps out of box in the middle of pitchers wind up, pitcher sees batter step out and she stops the pitch. Blue never gave time to batter or pitcher. What's the call?

The batter cannot act in any way to cause the pitcher to make an illegal pitch. I have a no pitch, everyone reset.
However, I'm also warning the batter and the coach, and if it happens again I'll start calling strikes.

Either of those calls would have worked! But I suppose he wasn't in the mood to be giving out warnings.

Can you give some examples of what a batter could do to cause an illegal pitch?

That would be section 10, not 19.

Whos to say the actions by the coach and or batter in the original post werent for the obvious purpose to induce an illegal pitch? Bases loaded, 2 outs, you get an illegal pitch it scores a run. Sorry, but sounds pretty fishy to me, especially after pitcher had already started her delivery.

I think you will find that most umpires are going to rule any actions by the batter that causes the pitcher to stop her delivery is a no pitch situation.

Speaking ASA, where does it say the batter MUST remain in the batter's box during a pitch?

This is from the 2005 ASA rulebook, which is the one I have handy right now. I doubt the rule has changed since then.

Rule 6.10.E.
A no pitch is declared when:
E. No player, manager or coach shall call time, employ any other word or phrase, or commit any act while the ball is alive and in play for the obvious purpose of trying to make the pitcher commit an illegal pitch. A warning shall be issued to the offending team, and a repeat of this type act by any member of the team warned shall result in the offender being ejected from the game.
EFFECT - The ball is dead, and all subsequent action on that pitch is canceled.

MTR, here is the rule you are looking for:

Rule 7.3.E.
After the ball is in play, the batter may not step out of the batter's box to stop play unless time has been granted by the umpire.
EFFECT - All action will continue and the pitch will be called.
EXCEPTION - If special conditions warrant, such as a ball from another field, a wind gust putting dust in a better's eyes, or car lights in the batter's eyes, time can be called.

Sorry, but I am not going to reward the batter for stepping out of the box when time has not been granted. If the pitcher does complete deliver of the pitch, it will be called accordingly, but, if the batter stepping out causes the pitcher to stop her delivery, it will be a no pitch situation. In my judgement, the batter has purposely stepped out to cause an illegal pitch.

Then maybe you should track down Luau for a newer book, assuming you are registered. :D

And what word, phrase or act did the coach employ to make the pitcher commit an IP? S/he is no longer permitted to communicate with their player once the pitcher begins her motion?
And for that matter, from the OP, we don't even know if the pitch has begun at this point.

Not really. This is simply a redundant statement that clearly states the batter cannot stop play be stepping out of the BB. There is no requirement that the batter stay in the BB once the pitcher prepared to pitch.

By rule, this is an IP unless the umpire judges the coach's/batter's action(s) intentional for the purpose of causing the pitcher to react.

Precisely. I am not going to be having batters wandering off in the middle of the pitch and granting them illegal pitches.

MTR, I obviously have my 2010 book, it just so happens I am traveling and that I have scanned the 2005 into my computer for reference.

From the OP,
and she steps out of box in the middle of pitchers wind up

From MTR,
And for that matter, from the OP, we don't even know if the pitch has begun at this point.

I think, if you're going to cite what the OP says, you should read it more carefully.

How does everyone feel about this situation? This is a casebook play, and I'll reveal the answer after some discussion.

F1 is in the windup when B1 raises their hand as if to request "time" and F1 stops in the middle of the windup. What is the ruling?

Seems like the same breed of situation to me.
