I'm going to try and keep my mouth shut( not real good at that) and try to get on his good side. I've seen and heard plate umps talking to coaches about their pitchers spins and locations in the middle of a game , but just a friendly(practice).

Sharps hypo...I see girls out of position in the infield all the time and could get somebody hurt. My kid would be the first one to run blindly into another player cause she's assuming that other players going to get out of the way.

When I play...if blues not looking we often step into the path of a base runner just enough to break his stride.

Umpires shouldn't coach a player, but I think some of the coaches take it a little too far.

I've seen coaches come unglued for an umpire just reminding F3 to give the runner the base when there is no play. OTOH, I could understand the coach's furor if the umpire told the player where they can or cannot stand.

I'm working some 23U-level ball right now which are basically college players home for the summer just honing their game and getting a workout while having a good time with their fellow players.

It is not unusual to see a couple pitchers and catchers as the game progresses. Like pitchers, each catcher has their own style, so I may ask them about something they may do to make sure things go well. I would never initiate a conversation in a competitive game.

However, I don't understand the coaches' concerns when it may be nothing more than a simple swap of information that can only help their players and umpires to coexist better on the field.

I am a very competent coach, and I dont want umpires instructing my players. So I want no part of him trying to do so with my team.
That probably would be no big deal if he was doing this with crappy teams, but not with good ones. There is NO GOOD coach that is going to sit back and have a blue call his players out of the dugout so he can start giving them coaching... which is absolutely a NO NO for ALL UMPIRES.

Reverse the situation and let the coach give instructions on how to umpire. What would the response be???

We were playing late Sunday night at the Champions Cup in 16u bracket play. Scouts had gone home, so game intensity was high. We got a “tie goes to the runner” safe call at first that went our way. The opposing coach came unglued. He called time walked out to the base ump and started his objection speech. Paraphrasing “I know I can’t argue safe/out calls, but you made that call way too early”. This lasted for 30 seconds or so. When he was done I think the blue said thank you and walked away. I had to bite my tongue hard on that one. I wanted to say nice call blue (because it was) but I let it go.

When are coaches going to stop umpiring?
