Worst call in the history of softball!

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by Clarence-Ohver » Wed Aug 27, 2008 9:41 am

A lead off hitter triples. After several pitches to the next batter, a past ball scores the runner from third on a close play at the plate. The same batter takes the next pitch which the umpires rings her up, strike three. The batter goes to the dugout and the new batter steps in the box and takes a pitch. The scorer from the team who just scored the run tells the home plate umpire....the past ball on the previous batter should have been ball four. In the excitement of the play at the plate, apparently the umpire lost track of the count.

Anyway, the home plate and base umpires confer and the home plate umpire signals to the girl he rung up one batter before to leave the dugout and go to first base. Instead of an out, she became a base runner. I have been watching softball for 40+ years and have never seen a call like that.

Comments please.

Once the next pitch was thrown, it's in the books as a strikeout

Oh come on. This is the worst drama queen post in the history of heybuckets rule forum.

Thats not even close to the worst call I've ever made.

Its darn near close to a GOOD pre fall ball season call... and we dont even know the score and outs, of which would be required for a decent fall ball call on this play. Age group? Run rule looming? Tie score? All this must be considered.

LOL, I dont want to particularly say since.. while it was a good call, it may have not been a wise call considering the game... and the press beat me up in several papers. It was fairly traumatic thing that left a real impression.

I've done the bad calls though.. the shots down 3B line called wrong (fair/foul).. outs when the ball was dropped.. I've been tricked by the change up, and I've rang em up acrossed their eyes on strike 2.. i've done em all.

Well ... this is not actually the worst call ... but perhaps the worst move by a BU ... who when positioned behind short fielded a ground ball that got past her and prevented it from getting to the outfield ... twice in a game before PU removed him from the field ... hhhmmm? maybe PU's call was the BEST call in the history of softball ... LMAO

All right, fess up. What was your worst call???

Years ago after a night of heavy drinking and I've got the dish for an 8:00 AM tournament game the next morning. I ring the batter up on the first pitch of the game. My partner comes running in wanting to know how it can be strike three. I responded that I saw three balls come through the strike zone equaling strike three.

Of course the count was corrected.
