Running when you K...

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by lvtwft » Tue Jun 01, 2010 2:50 pm

What is the ruling when a team has ALL their girls run when they K?? No drop 3rd, they all just run to 1st . They even went as far as rounding first and breaking down about 15-20 feet off the bag...

Delay of game it should be..Especially when it is a drop dead game...

Anyone have some insight on this?? Have seen an umpire call it or if there is a rule that deals with this type of thing??

Unless the girl is REALLY SLOW, don't know how this delays the game. Next batter is moving up to the box. Team on defense does around the horn and by the time the catcher pats the pitcher on the butt, gets back to her position and has her next sign/passes it on, the girl is in the dugout with her helmet on the bench and getting a drink of water.

Drop dead game? Like a timed game; finish the batter type game? Like a tourney pool play game? Like when the coin is flipped, the winner chooses to be visitors so they can bat first type game?

It was a 1:20 drop dead game. Once you hit that mark, the game was over (finish the batter pool type coin flip game).

I am not sure if they were doing this to try and confuse my team and or by chance we dropped the 3rd stike they would just be running.

But it did take time off the clock, especailly when the girl rounds first base with a runner on base all ready. The pitcher had the ball and was waiting for the batter to vacate the field a couple times.
I am just seeing if there was a rule out there for this type of thing?

I don't believe I'd get to excited about what happens in a pool game. Typically, this is a warm-up game. Scores don't mean anything; free substitution; bat the lineup. Lots of things happen in pool games you won't see in bracket games.

It's possible the offensive coach is testing you. He wants to see how your team reacts. What he learns will be applied during bracket games. Instead of worrying how to stop his shenanigans, teach your players how to respond to the situation. With no one on, you got nothin'. Igonore it. With runner on 3rd or 2nd, He's trying to draw a throw to first. What is your team going to do? This is a teaching moment. Use it.

Many teams do it as a way to stay loose and make it a habbit in case of a droped third stike. Same as finishing a play on a grounded foul.
Never seen a kid round the bag before though.

Here's the scenario where it would be delay of game and a strike on the batter.

B1 on 1B. Batter takes a pitch of either a strike or ball, and it does not result in either a walk, or strike 3, and begins to run down to 1st without legally being allowed to advance to 1B. By rule, this would be a delay of game, dead ball, warning to the batter and put B1 back on 1B. If it happens again, then it would be a strike on the batter. One could invoke the 10 second rule as well.

ASA Rule(s) 7-3-C & 7-4-(K-L)

If its strike 3, the batter may or may not know if the catch caught it, therefore being a drop 3rd, at which point, the BR has every right to attempt to obtain B1.

I believe its the same for NHSF, not sure about NCAA.

This seems an example of an excessive extreme of an otherwise legal activity in softball and that is intentionally delaying the game and he will absolutely immediately stop it. There is no excuse for that, that is why there is a 1st base coach - to tell them they are out. I'm not going to allow you to disrupt the game with goofball antics.

This is not to say that running after 3k is an illegal activity. When it gets to be excessive though to the point of intentionally delaying the game, like running around and rounding a bag and playing cat mouse .. except there aint no cat - we are all standing there looking at you cuz everyone on earth knows she is out, including you, we will be having a very short chat.
