Maintaining Control on a tag

Okay, I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I think there are a few who are misinterpreting this.

Having control of the ball DURING a tag oes not mean BEFORE a tag.

Obviously, at least is it to me, that if a player has the ball in their hand and loses the ball when they touch the base/runner, the player did NOT have control of the ball. Same with a glove. If a defender slaps a runner with the glove and the ball comes out upon contact, the defender did not have control of the ball.

Also obvious, is that an umpire does not always see the ball is in the glove during a tag, hence they are determining control when they ask to see it.

Yes, but what isn't the rule is the belief that a tag "must be completed" by a demonstration of control after that portion of the play is finished.

This play is not much different than an umpire making a judgment on a player losing the ball while attempting to turn a duece.
