It's official. Worst. Umpire. Ever.

What's on your mind?

by softball**mom » Tue Jul 01, 2014 10:54 pm

In Colorado. Runner on first. Base ump standing between second and third. Runner tries to steal second; catcher throws down and picks her off. Everyone waiting for the call from base ump. He's staring straight ahead completely unaware that a play was going on about 20 feet away from him. Plate blue has to make the call.

From then on base blues eyes are transfixed on the base runners feet so that during the rest of the game he calls three runners out for the girls stepping off base for shifting their weight/readjusting take off stance. He completely misses everything else going on on the field.

Plate blue is pissed off and after each call looks for an official to get another base blue. After the game plate blue was going to make sure they let base blue go.

We all have had games with what we mat perceive as inconsistent calls or bad calls. But to have a blue completely ignorant of what's going on is the worst.

Well, what did you expect?

After all, they did pass that new law in Colorado concerning cannabis. I'm sure that "base" blue was just enjoying the game.

Did he walk out there with a half eaten bag of Doritos stuffed in his belt?

So your DD was the catcher and your team was losing. There's much more going on in a game than one call. You want the umpires on your side. When criticizing umpires, take a look at the whole game. They're only human. As a coach, I appreciate umpires and their commitment to the sport. Not to say I don't disagree with calls, I just pick and choose when to challenge a call in my favor. Did you get any other calls!

How did you get that from the OP? Hmm.......more to this story. Sounds like this blue had no clue and did not belong on the field.

A couple of years ago, we were in championship bracket play in Colorado and we ran into a pitcher that crow-hopped more than a men's fastpitch pitcher. We kept asking the base blue about it and all she would do is shrug her shoulders. We asked the plate blue and he said it was her call. The third umpire was not there, they were running short on blues. At the end of the game, we went to the UIC to talk about the situation and the blue in question was already there, as we approached we overheard her ask the UIC, "What is crow-hopping?"

I'm not sure what you are trying to prove by venting about this blue that made a call you did not like. Maybe after the 1st time your base runner shifted her feet, your coach should have gone out and talked to the base ump to find out why he was making this call.

Then after finding out his interpretation of the rule he was enforcing, a good coach would then tell his players not to make the same mistake!

...had one come over to our side and apologize for being 'nice' to him because he didn't know the rules in softball on WILDLY illegal pitches...Also had one in like 3 games ...I think he got arrested in the State our team was from and body cavity searched...Took the game into his own hands...Got a picture at about 5 o'clock of beer cans where the blue parked...Miller Lite hydration station

The worst is when a softball mom thinks she knows everything and after one call that she disagrees with can't see anything else.
