Qualifing out of your state

Just curious of the general feeling when it comes to teams traveling out of state to quailify for nationals. Should teams be restricted to their local district or state to qualify (Not considering tournaments like the HOF, regionals etc... ) or do you agree with teams from say SoCal going to North Dakota to quallify.

My personal opinion is that ASA in no way has a handle on registrations or any control on the youth aspect of the sport (Qualifing, classifications etc...) . I don't agree with a team who can't get it done in Houston going to Michigan to win a berth JMO. If Michigan has 1 berth then a team from Michigan should be awarded that berth and allowed to attend and represent the state. If they decline the berth then it should be passed along somehow.

So Cal wise, I think that now that they are giving 12 berths, there should be no reason to travel. If you can't get in via States or Regionals at this point, go to Westerns.

Agreed! In the past, California had just 3 berths at State, which was ridiculous!! Now, with 12, and Regionals, thats plenty! Teams shouldn't go outside California.

Speaking as a midwesterner, yes teams from California(and other states) come to our regional qualifer and try to win berths to ASA Nationals as is allowed in the rules. Sometimes they go away empty handed. Whether an outside team wins or a team from this region, it makes the regional qualifier a "special" tournament in this area where you get an opportunity to play some top teams from around the country without getting on an airplane to do so.

There are other opportunities to qualify for ASA berths in my state that are open to teams for only MN and IMO that makes it fair and provides an opportunity to maintain ASA National as a true national tournament, not just a Texas/California playoff.

We get three berths per age group for the State of MN and there are only 30 teams actively pursuing those berths, and IMO of those probably less than 10 are of the quality that they would be competitive at an ASA National and really are focused on that goal. If 3 out the 10 teams ready to pursue ASA Nationals get there that seems like a pretty reasonable ratio compared to the 6 out of 100's that are trying to get there from SoCal and NorCal.

Don't feel sorry for us at regionals, the trend seems to be that our top club programs are making great strides (MN Irish finish tied 17th at 18U ASA Gold last year and MN Sting finished 2nd at 18UA ASA Nationals in Moline last year) and what is happening is that although we don't have the number of athletes that the California's and Texan's have, the ones we have are being funneled to relatively small number of club programs which is creating very high quality teams

For me, it's not feeling sorry. 12 berths at State. Usually, more than one at Regionals. And, I believe there is one more qualifier that sends 1. That's plenty for California now.

The problem with Regionals is it is just 3 weeks before Nationals. They need to move it to an earlier date. What about teams that had very tough draws at state. You think they should not travel? Some out of state qualifiers have 0 teams from thier own state in them just out of state teams? I think if it is your teams goal to get to ASA/USA Nationals you do what ever you have to do to get there. JMO>

What age group? 12 & 14 u was Hayward I think. Same this year. or Stockton & Hayward. 2 long drives 4 to 5 hours and hotel. Still have to pay for National. Out of state may be cheaper????

In my own quest I have found that alot of states the host qualifiers also have 2 or 3 qualifiers that are limited to thier own state & region aswell SoCal ASA needs to have a couple more qualifiers & also need to have a Western only qualifier.
