Team Carrying Extra Players

I was in conversation with a few other people and the topic of a team carrying a few extra players that only pitch. They practice with the team but when it comes to friendlies they are only at the game(s) that they are scheduled to pitch. Has anyone seen or heard of teams doing this? If so, at what division have you seen this?
