Leaving a team, How do you do it?

What's on your mind?

by ink_n_paint » Fri Jun 22, 2012 7:24 pm

It's time to part with a team, mid season. How do you do it without becoming a bad guy. The coach is not what I expected and other offers have come in. I read on here that you just do it because its part of the game. But are we leaving the team high and dry mid season, hurting the teams chances.
My kid is not a star, but she holds her own, this team is full of kids who play well and can win with out her. I just don't want her to be labeled as a quiter, should we wait till fall to go to the other team, they need her now according to the coach

I hope my coaches don't see this. But in the end you have to do what is best for your daughter. Believe me, they won't hesitate to replace her if they find someone better. To be honest, I'm finding out the hard way, there is no loyalty from a coach or player perspective. Just move on if it is best for your daughter. In the end that is all that matters, just respectfully move on, I think that is all any Manager/Coach can ask for.

Hmmm...how about doing what's right and not hide behind "what's best for your daughter". Maybe you don't feel any loyalty to the coaches. Fine. How about loyalty to your DD's teammates? They deserve better than to have key teammates leave with a month left in the season.

As Spazsdad said, unless something really bad happened, show some integrity and stick it out. Especially at the younger age groups. And if your current team doesn't qualify for Nationals, your DD can be a pickup player for another team -- probably in a matter of weeks. THAT'S how you do it without becoming the bad guy.

I am so tired of hearing this from parents and coaches alike. What any coach or manager can and should ask for is that every ADULT involved show kids what character and integrity and honor really is by their actions.

Unfortunately few do this these days, but that doesn't mean you can't buck the trend and be the example to your daughter. It's only a freaking game - what matters here is what we teach our kids.

So the coaches dont have to live up to this as well? what do we pay for, take my money now and replace me when you can but if I think you're making bad coaching decisions I have to stick it out....? now what are you teahcing your kid?

There's always talk of being "replaced". Most of the weekends throughout the summer should be friendlies/showcases. Most coaches are pretty fair about giving everyone playing time on these occasions. Obviously, there will be 1-2 qualifying weekends. Hopefully, all parents understand that the coach needs to play the best 9-10 at that time. You probably shouldn't judge a coach based on 1 qualifying weekend where your DD got less playing time.

BTW, another thing to consider when switching teams at this time: Not everyone on the new team will be happy your DD is there. Now your DD is the one taking playing time away from someone else.

Paul Simon wrote that song.

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Oh you hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key (unis), Lee
And get yourself free.
