Worst softball drill you ever saw ?

What's on your mind?

by GIMNEPIWO » Tue May 08, 2012 5:24 am

I'll go first since I saw this last night:

Place 6 outfielders in center field, hit them fly balls and encourage them to crash, climb, grab, push and fight over the ball as a competition ...

A coach standing on a ladder and dropping balls down at the girls for them to hit as part of a hitting drill. I guess he was working on the DROP ball??? :?

Two buckets placed about 25 feet apart and half (5) of the girls stands side by side between the buckets. The other half gets one soft toss wiffle ball to hit and if it goes through the 5 girls between the buckets it is a point. Any where else it is an out. Mind you, wind is 20mph with gusts of 30+. Batter standing about 35-40 feet away from buckets. No gloves for the girls.

What is this...red rover, red rover, let the wiffle ball come over....

Any of them where a girl is told to run to the fence because she failed to perform, instead of given another chance....

My favorite is a girl at the plate, she is either just learning how to hit and can't put the bat on the ball or she can hit and the coach can't throw a strike. So you have a bunch of girls standing on the field doing nothing and a bunch of girls lined up at the fence doing nothing waiting their turn. So you suggest getting a tee out and are told with a look that screams you're an idiot that the girls need to learn how to hit pitched balls!

Exactly

WTF?
And some people wonder how a coach can get sued for negligence.

I have used a drill similar to this back in rec ball, but stood on a bucket. I used it to have the girls work on bat speed and it keeps them from using a long swing when making contact to the ball. Since they don't have very much time to make contact with the ball it forces them to go "hands to the ball" or they will miss the ball. It is a very effective drill for rec ball.

I don't think this is bad if you know why & what you are using it for. This is a beginners drill when they are still young.

Just my 2 cents

All the girls line up behind 3rd base, coach at the plate hits a grounder to first player at 3B, who fields it and throws home, then sprints toward the SS position and coach hits a grounder while she is in a full sprint. If she fields it while in a full sprint, she just wildly tosses it back towards home (doesnt stop, set feet and make a proper throw) and keeps running towards the 2B position; if she misses it, just keep running towards 2B position. Coach hits another ball toward 2B position while player is in a full sprint. Same result of throwing wildly towards home or keep running toward 1B position, where coach hits another ball while she is on the move. I'm still trying to figure out what the player got out of that drill to just keep running around the infield and I'm going to hit a ball at you while you are running.
