As Rec Leagues are preparing to select their All-Star teams, parent and coach behavior seems worse then ever. Are things really worse or am I imagining things?
I would love to hear some of the crazy stories out there. Around here, teams aren't even selected and we have parents of "on the bubble" players already whinning. They don't understand that the last thing an all team team needs is whinning parents.
We also have managers who didn't get a single vote from their peers stirring the pot because everyone should know they are the best selection.
It is a great sport and experience but I sometimes wonder if it is all worth it.

My DD's second year of Rec All-stars- coach picked a team made up of half-players and the other half his daughter and friends
Team went 1-15.
despite that record- his DD & friends still got the vast majority of playing time.
As for "marginal" players
In my daughters first year of 10u- she was the 14th person picked on a 14 player roster- coach said to me "she made the team because we need the players" She worked hard and became an important player on that team. The love for the game that she learned from that team and coach inspired her to get better- later on TB teams, HS and eventually college. Coaches can have a huge impact(especially on younger) on supposedly marginal players

DD was a 4-Time 8U All-Star back in the day. Three of the four years were great. One of the year's was a disaster (parents getting into each others faces and about to throw down because they were cracking on each others kids), but overall I loved representing our city back in the day. Enjoy it while it last!

DD currently plays 14u travel and this is her 4th year of travel ball, having started travel at second year 10u. Around March 1st, we went to watch a couple local HS teams play a scrimmage, and they were playing at fields where the local rec league games were going on. A couple of the rec coaches and a couple players that know DD from school came over and told us they heard about DD and wanted know if she would join the rec league so she could pitch for "their all star team". After DD and I got up off the ground from laughing, I thought to myself: OMG, it is March 1st, rec ball has barely even started, and they are out recruiting players for "their" all star team, as if they already knew who is going to be on the team and who is going to be coaching the team. By So Cal ASA rules, of course, they are not even allowed to talk about all star selection until May 1st. Oddly, we didnt come out of that local rec league when we went to travel, we played in another local league where the all star selection situation was much worse. But as they say, all's well that ends well.

AllStar Selections are easy for our league. you have to be a coach or board member for your kid to make it. thats why I coach. so my not so good DD can make the allstars. and if I ever get to be the allstar coach? look out. that would be nice.......

So we announce All Stars for each division... and they get a t-shirt and a place in the 'Hall of Fame' on our league website...but we don't actually participate in the All Star tournaments/process. All the players who want to continue playing after rec has finished go off and play full-time travel. All Star is a PITA around here so we no longer bother (and travel is king).
Actually many of the players play rec and travel at the same time and our travel organization organizes around their commitments. Lots of one-day Sunday stuff until rec ends - then once rec ends the weekend tournaments are started.

Nah, things aren't worse - just the same as always.
DD was a first year 12U and the coach of the All-Star team came up to me and informed that while he would take DD on the team, she wouldn't get any playing time. (His kid played the same positions). The league always had a "second" team for summer, for those kids who didn't make the real All-Star team but whose parents insisted they play. The coach this summer was someone we knew to be nice, so DD elected to play with him. Comes the local ASA ''B" qualifier and the team of left-overs beats the crap out of the so-called All-Stars.
This was 6 years ago, but I'm over it....
