Sonoma State's Samantha Lipperd pitched back to back games of 8 innings and 11 innings striking out 17 batters in the 1st game and then 26 batters in the 2nd game. The 26 strike outs is a new Div II national record. These games were the first two of five pool play games at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Ca. In all she pitched every inning of 7 games (a total of 54 innings) over 3 days. She ended the weekend with 104 strike outs.
She was named the Div II National pitcher of the week. The team ended the tournament with a 6-1 record.

Sonoma only had 2 pitchers and two days before the tournament the #2 pitcher decided to leave the team. The coach always gave the pitcher the option to sit out, but Lippert always wanted in. She is a very determined young lady.

At least she can look at that "Pitcher of the WeeK" award when she can't pick up her kid or lift her arm after she's 40.

That's nothing! Steve Nebraska of the NY Yankees pitched a perfect game in the World Series. 27 up 27 down 27 K's. He only threw 81 pitches in the game.

Yikes-hope she can hold up the rest of the season. Seems like a lot of pitching for one player (even if it is softball....)

And how can she have the option of sitting out if there is no other pitcher?? Do they have a player who used to pitch way back when who's going to start up again....

That's what I figured. Hope #1 stays healthy. Sonoma start the season w/only the two pitchers??
