Meet the new D1 academic requirements that take affect

What's on your mind?

by ocsoftball » Thu Feb 16, 2012 7:58 pm

for the class of 2015 and beyond:

The minimum core course GPA has increased from 2.00 to 2.30

10 of the 16 core course requirements must be satisfied prior to the start of the seventh semester (senior year)

7 of those 10 core courses must be from the English, Math and Science subsections

Grades earned in the those 10 core courses are "locked in" for the purpose of calculating the final core course GPA.

Any retakes of the first 10 core courses for grade improvement must be completed prior to senior year

Confused? It gets better.

There is a new NCAA term. Meet the "Academic Redshirt." Que? (Que is Spanish for "what?" By the way, Spanish and all other foreign language courses will not count for 7 of 10 core courses required by the end of the junior year.)

The "Academic Redshirt" term applies to a D1 prospective student-athlete (PSA) in 2015 and beyond who does not meet the new 2.30 core course GPA requirement, but has a core course GPA above 2.00 and has met the SAT/ACT sliding scale requirements (more on that in a minute). As an Academic Redshirt a student may still receive a scholarship and practice with their team, but may not participate in game competition as a college freshman.

Speaking of the sliding SAT/ACT scale, it has also increased. Significantly.

Im a bit slow today, so hopefully you can help me out here. If DD retakes one of the first 10 core courses, improves from C to an A, how is this calculated into the gpa? At the kid's HS, they say the course stays on the record, but the improved grade is the one calculated into the GPA. Is it now ALL grades earned in the those 10 core courses are "locked in" for the purpose of calculating the final core course GPA, regardless of the retake grade?

Great question...I was thinking the same thing and read it again...

Just took my DD to Freshman orientation/enrollment last week, and in the seminar for prospective athletes, this was explained to us exactly as you penned it.

I hope that is the case, as I think these new rules are really going to put the hurt on some kids who may not necessarily have been on the bubble, but just above.

The retake for a core 10 class must be done prior to senior year to be included in GPA. Removes the ability to retake a core class during the senior year to improve GPA.

An example: if your 2015 DD got a D in English as a Sophomore she retakes as a Junior and gets a B, the B is replaces the D. If she retakes the course as a senior and gets a B, the D remains on the NCAA eligibility transcript. You have to remember that NCAA entrance and individual district graduation requirements are not the same. In essence this will give NCAA schools a better snapshot of a students true core GPA by the end of the 6th semester of HS.

*Not sure if the clears up any confusion. Hope it doesn't add to it.

This is more aimed at those football and basketball powers that know every way to two-step eligibility. Often these super recruits during their Jr. or Sr. year realize that, oops, I’m short on core classes. Places like Kansas or Kentucky (among others), would find a way to get a bunch of core credit with summer courses, correspondence courses, etc.. and viola, this super recruit now has enough core credits.

This will really impact basketball much more than softball.

Hey Crash, thanks for clarifying.

On a related note, can anyone point me to a resource of what the kid needs to do for different schools with regard to AP classes, etc?

For example, I was told UC schools look at GPA but also at the AP load as well. Also, and I know this was covered elsewhere, but any advice with regard to SAT and ACT. One coach told me that depending on the schools she is interested in, she should focus on the the test that best plays to her strengths. I have looked some web sites that lay out comparisons (http://www.petersons.com/college-search ... t-sat.aspx), but any first hand knowledge and advice is helpful. The kid's focus is on using softball to get into a school where she may not otherwise be able to do so. The WCWS isnt her goal - a great education while also playing a sport she loves is.

any advice with regard to SAT and ACT

Take both during sophomore year.

the AP load

As many as she can handle and still get A's.
