How long should I wait for a decision?

I coach a first year 10u select team. We had a strong player come tryout and we offered her a spot. Her parents were burned by a previous first year team and are understandably uncertain. We have invited her to practice with us, but she can't until next week. I have two other girls who would like to tryout and would fill our needs for bracket pitching(possibly). My question is how long do you think I should hold a roster spot open? This is an exceptional young athlete, but I am worried about missing out on so done else.

Couple of things here.

I always try to leave myself an opening for 1 player that truly is a cut above the rest. I fill my roster with enough quality players that I can operate comfortably if the phenom never comes.... but I always try to leave myself an out if that kid does show up.

How many kids do you currently have committed? You need (IMO) 12 players to run your team, so if would commit to 11 players and wait that week or even 2 weeks for this other kid. You are waiting, and not waiting at the same time if that makes any sense.

You have 11 kids that you can play with, so you are good no matter what, whether that kid comes or not. If you have 12 and then she decides to come, IMO, you now have too many players. So if you take 12, that means you arent waiting for her at all and I would call that family and just let them know you can wait any longer... or you do what I would do... take the 11 and wait it out. Patience always seems to work for me.

My roster right now is at 13 ( I will only carry 14). I am perfectly happy with my roster as it stands. I dont really need anything, so I am good. BUT............ if the next superstar happened to show up on my doorstep, I still have room for one more, and I would surely take her.... even though I am not actively looking for anything. Does any of this rambling make sense??

In any event, the kid is waiting for a reason, and that reason is that she is looking at other teams, and if she is that good, she will be offered spots on all of them. My guess is she isnt coming, or they would have already said so. So go with your gut and move on.
