I have the bushnell velocity and find it to be pretty accurate. I calibrate it on the freeway shooting signs.

I picked up the pocket radar. It's just a little bigger then some of the phones, and get this, you can put it in your pocket. It works great, I've had people check it out and order one while they were watching games.
It's a cost a little bit more. I paid 179.00 with free shipping.

I have the $300 bushnell one. Got it about 5 years ago as a coach's gift from my 10U team.
It's accurate, so some might say it registers lower speeds...
It's been calibrated with a tuning fork that the railroads use for their speed guns.

Here are the different guns I've seen:

The Louisiana 10U gun.
All readings are above 56mph. Find the "Boo can throw 58 mph" thread on Heybucket from this past spring season for proof.

The Texas 12U gun.
All readings are above 58 mph, most are closer to 63mph.

The Texas 14U and above gun:
All readings are 68 mph or higher.

All these guns are defective, because none register a change up, or think that pitch is important for that matter...

Fortunately I have a voice operated remote control calibrator function on this unit; I say "calibrate" and DD aims and shoots; completely hands free.

I'm curious exactly what the purpose of dad having a radar gun is?
I'm not (neccesarily) criticizing anyone for owning one but I just don't see the purpose.

DD (or DS) is a pitcher and you want to see their speed - I get that.
Then what? Do they throw faster because you can pull it out during games?
Does the curve/screw/rise move more?
Do they hit their spots better?

In my experience back in the day of coaching baseball pitchers, a dad would whip out his gun and stand there behind the backstop and "gun" little Jonnie all game or practice. It was like a Mullah showing up or something - all the other dads would cluster around the guy with the gun and mutter things about how fast he was throwing and what a stud he is as the dad smiles in agreement. Meanwhile, little Jonnie's accuracy was going all to hell. Movement in the tank and even the mechanics changed as he tried not to react to everyone standing back there. It got to the point that I absolutely forbid my pitchers from being gunned during games or practices. Want to put a speed gun on your kid? Do it on your own time!

Even when my own DD pitched a million years ago, her pitching coach had a gun that he would only pull out about once every 4-6 months just to measure progress. Even then, she would start missing her spots as soon as the thing showed up.

So what do you do with yours???

3 years ago I'm coaching in 14's and holding pitcher tryouts...I had about 8 pitchers scheduled to show...4 of the 8 said all said similar things on the phone conversations..."I am not one to brag about my kid, but she throws 60 pretty consistently"...Knowing how rare it is in 14's to see "60" I figured what the hell and brought out the radar gun...Should have seen all those parents all of a sudden become very interested in what I was doing and watching them gather behind the backstop as each took their turn...Highest speed registered that day...54 mph

But, my radar gun was old...As stated by two of their parents...

I ended up with the pocket radar. it works good.

the reason I bought it was the coach told me my DD was to slow to pitch travel. I thought she was fine. I bought it and she was just as fast as his DD starting pitcher. He didn't like that.

I was like you, coach with radar gun, except we only got it out about once a year.

My DD sometimes throws 56mph, normally she throws 63. When I would mention to her that 'it seems slow' she thought I was being critical. Thing is that she looks like she is working harder than ever, just the pitch is slow. The radar gun gave an objective bit of data. She could stay more focus on looking for consistency around throwing hard. Anyway, it helped her.
