Another Batting Order Question

What's on your mind?

by txfpcoach » Mon Mar 24, 2008 6:11 am

OK here's the situation

1> Team bats through the order our scorekeeper is sharp and nothing is out of the ordinary.
2> The team we are playing is known to be shady and picks up 2-3 players each tournament so it's never easy to remember the players
3> Third inning rolls around and the team is on the bottom 3 batters our score keeper realizes they are out of order.
4> We let the girl bat she makes it to base safely, we call time and approach the umpire. The umpire goes to the other team goes to the girl comes back and tells use that they are in the correct order. That the "Numbers" don't matter only the girls names. "WTH"
5> next girl comes up and shes out of order (they skipped a number completely and it never batted again) all of a sudden there was no number 5 but 2 number 13's
6> same thing umpire asks the girl she gives the right name as the coaches are yelling its "SO and SO" its SO and SO

So my question is this what is the point of numbers what if you have a whole team of Amy's shouldn't the number be the first line of defense followed only by the name if a pick up player is using a duplicate number? The umpire and UIC made it clear that the Name is all that matters. We're pretty sure they changed jerseys during the game but had no way to prove it. We won the game so nothing to contest it's just a matter of understanding this better.

Sounds fishy to me and thoughts

Dont come back, I dont know any other way to handle it. Thats what we had to do - in some areas, what they did is considered normal - and the parents will laugh and brag about it. On the other side of it, is when those same kids get to high school, they wont be playing because they will either be a) failing and ineligible, b) taking care of their kids, or c) all of the above.

For now, when they call and ask you to play there, just say 'we are busy that weekend'. I know exactly what you are going through.
