QOD; How much practice is too much?

What's on your mind?

by eddiez577 » Wed Feb 13, 2019 8:56 am

Question of the day;
How much practice is too much?

Little Suzy has batting lessons, pitching lessons, speed/ strength & conditioning training, 6-8 hour TB team practice on Saturday, daily High School 3 hour practice, and is too burned out to be effective on game day. How much is too much?

What's you're routine? What do you expect from your players?

My DD in college so sounds about right! For younger girls, sounds excessive even for here in So Cal! if the TB coach is holding a weekly Saturday practice for 6-8 hours during HS Season, you probably need to look for another TB coach!

6-8 hour TB practice during HS....wow!?!? Now if she's a pitcher then she does need to pick up a ball pretty much everyday and go through the motions at about 30-60% of throwing speed but at least 2 days of the week at 100%. The travel ball practice for HS kids I don't really agree with. I mean having an occasional impromptu hitting or fielding session is plenty for HS kids. Anything more then that your gonna injure a kid or develop some over use issues. As for hitting if you don't use it you lose it!!

Only an 8th grader

Monday 30 min pitching lesson 30 min hitting lesson
Tuesday 30 min pitching lesson, 30 mins of hitting, 60 min fielding clinic
Wednesday Long Toss, 60 minute speed and conditioning class
Thursday pitching workout, 60 minute speed and conditioning class
Friday Off
Saturday games or team practice (usually 4 hours tops) or Off on Off weekends she will do Long Toss and throw a bully in the cage, usually 60-90 pitches
Sunday games or Off if Off she might do what she didn't get done on Saturday

Doesn't seem like it's too much. The time spent driving can be a pain. Right now the whole family is going a little Stir Crazy with this damn wet crap falling from the skies

In HS I do 2.5 to 3 hours a weekday and 3 hours Saturday AM, except game days ... Game days we do about 30 minutes in the cage and batting T stations, just enough to loosen up. Pitchers & Catchers still go to any outside instruction or throw a session if they need to, over and above. I do not encourage it, but if they want to go to a travel ball practice or tournament; I leave it up to them as long as it does not interfere with HS practice or game. Conditioning ? If they aren't beat by the time they leave one of my practices; have at it. I've not had that problem.

Thanks Uno! That means a lot coming from you. I appreciate you making this forum possible.
I got into TB about 7 years ago and was amazed at how hyper-competitive So Cal TB is and the dedication families put into their players/ student-athletes.
Just asking my fellow coaches and parents questions that we all wonder but never have the opportunity to ask, and what their threshold is for things such as this topic of practice, injuries, etc.

The question I would have to ask is:

Do these kids have homework and studying to do?

Good question for another QOD. What is the end goal, and at what cost...
