Group CATCHING Lessons - Waste of time - YES?

What's on your mind?

My DD has been going to her for years and loves her group lessons. By the way, she splits up her group lessons by skill level, so not only does my DD benefit from Jen's coaching, but also from the other committed girls in her group. These girls have all developed great relationships and are like sisters on the field. I love what Jen teaches these girls - strength, poise, a positive attitude.

When my family fell on hard times, we stopped going to lessons for a while to save money and she called us up and asked us to keep bringing my DD, no charge, until we got back on our feet. Would not hear about us paying her back. Not only that, she is relentless in support during the recruiting process, texting and emailing coaches on our behalf. I know she's done this for several students. Yes, she has grown and capitalized on her success, and why not? Just like with anything else, she has a program that can be successful if you implement the tools she provides. By the way, she posts many of her lessons online, no charge. You can benefit from her drills and techniques without the "group" and without spending a dime.

This is more along the lines of what I have heard about Jenn... Not only those three catchers but countless others committed. No where does she say "Come train with me and I'll get you a scholarship!"

I hate to say, but maybe SBJerk is kissed cause his/her DD isn't cuttin the mustard?!?!

Just sayin cause I can't think of another reason for the anger issues... GoosFraBah!!!

This thread really threw me for a loop? Then, I finally understood that it was a personal attack by an anonymous poster that doesn't have what it takes to post their real identity. I guess things didn't work out for his dd.

As an FYI, I give lessons and my dd gives lessons. My dd had a pretty good playing career and has just graduated. She gives group lessons and does use video in those lessons. Typically, she does overlap lessons. So, she starts 1 on 1 with a young lady and the next young lady shows up 20 minutes later. By that time, the first hitter has progressed on to other drills. The new hitter begins on drill work already done by the other. Hope that makes sense. DD then tries to work with new hitter 1 on 1. DD rakes in the money. Softballjerk, you'd be amazed at how much money a person can make like this. A hitter gets 40 minutes to work on their game with these facilities and pays ... a donation. DD doesn't have a set price because she is trying to help players who can't afford lessons with others. I'm betting that they get their money's worth.

I give lessons as well. Last night, I gave a lesson to 3 players at the same time. Our lesson was 1 1/2 hours long. I had 3 stations set up and the girls rotated. We started and stopped with quizzes on what we were working on. When it was time to stop, the youngest, 10 years old, asked why we had to stop. I told her she had to get home and get ready to go to bed and get good grades for today. My cost for this? "Thanks Coach." I haven't charged for a lesson in 20 years.

Softballjerk, I'm sorry you have some issues somewhere. However, there are a lot of us giving group lessons simply to help others out. Sure, I'd like to do one on one. However, I have limited time and too many wanting help. My daughter drives an hour to help her kids. She wants to give back because softball was so good for her. She earned a college education, many conference and national awards and so, wants to help some of these disadvantaged kids have the same opportunities. I know that those that receive these lessons do not think that they are a waste of time.

Great that you would do the lessons for nothing. You will, however, agree with me that you are within the overwhelming minority when it comes to instructors and private lessons. I don't know the young lady being addressed. She is open to criticism, as are the instructors I mentioned previously (Rico, Bruder, Kubata), for appearing to be more focused on income than actually maximizing help for these players.

Cannonball -
Now, 3 players in an hour and a half lessons, can certainly get things done - but that's not what I am talking about here. It's the cattle call group lessons, where nothing specific to an individuals needs are addressed, everyone just gets the same Workout of the Day (which is NO WAY to correct individuals flaws or enhance their particular strengths. These types of lessons are just nothing but a crap sandwich (it may look like good from the outside, but inside is an awful substance, or as the name suggests; crap).

Small groups of players (you mentioned 3), together in a hitting lesson, each taking turns and each having their specific needs scrutinized, addressed and corrected can be beneficial.

10 kids in a 60 minute groups session, all performing synchronized nothing drills at the same time is NOT beneficial and especially not every week!

These loyalist you see here defending this charade are not fooled by this, they know damn well that this weekly sham is not going to make their daughters better at throwing runners out (I'm sure even Jessica Plaza's would agree), but what it does do is give these kids a false sense of doing something to get better at the craft of catching, when nothing could be further from the truth.

Jenn knows this herself, but it's a profitable business model that was established by a mentor of hers, years ago and is ONLY designed to maximize revenue to her in the set amount of time (say 60 minutes). It's not ever going to be for the betterment of the kids - its to take your hard earned money and get it into her pocket (or Gucci purse), while painting an illusion that this is somehow needed to be a great catcher. It's NOT...

I give the girl a lot of credit, she has fooled a lot of grown adults into thinking she is necessary for their DD success, and found a way to give very little, while taking in a lot of their money. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, softball parents have proven to be really very stupid, when it comes to making sound, common sense decisions.

Save your money on these weekly wastes of time and find someone that will pay attention to your kids specific needs and has a systematic plan on making her better and more proficient - especially when it comes to throwing runners out.

You see, when a college coach comes to a game and notices runners advancing bases at will, they don't care if the catcher has gone to weekly Jen Shro group sessions for years and learned to be in perfect sync with the other "hot-footers" there. They care about keeping runners from advancing.

So, how do you get better at throwing runners out; First of all, none of the BS she is doing each and every week in these group sessions will help at all. When trying to shave off .10 of a second here and there, it takes a lot of slow motion analysts and time spent correcting individual flaws. Some it may be foot work, some it may be the sequencing or the kinetic chain in her throwing form, and there is a host of other issues that should be observed and THEN corrected. AT no time, should meaningless drill be thrown at players under the pretense of it making them better.

She does NONE of this, because she can't generate the type of revenue she can by the nonsense she does now.

Don't have to be a loyalist to be smart enough to not take advice from an ax grinder. Sorry things did not work out for your DD.
