Is this post on "Who has class" or "Who lacks class"?

Thing is, good classy coaches don't really draw attention to themselves, and don't provide much fodder for message boards. So it's natural that any discussion of coaches will gravitate toward the more "colorful" members of the ranks.
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

That coach is a complete and utter ASSHAT who has absolutely no business coaching children. You're on his team and want to defend him? Rationalize away. I'm certain you would feel the same way if one of your kid's teachers acted like that. Oh wait. Thats different. Education is far LESS important than a bunch of 12 year olds playing a game. Yeah, like that behavior would fly if a teacher pulled that emotionally unstable act and defended his assinine behavior by saying he was trying to motivate his students. That would be the end of that teacher's career unless he left the area and found a job where they didn't know he had EVER pulled that kind of stunt.

I will never ceased to be amazed at what parents condone in the context of sports but in absolutely no other context. But then again, there is no shortage of pitiful souls who long to be on reality TV.

Do you think that the coach breaking the trophy actually harmed those kids in any way?

Sure it happens. Teacher says something radical in his classroom, whether he believes it or not, and then states that he was trying to cause controversy to play on student's emotions so they think and respond. I think “respond” is the key word. In the classroom, religion is the top catalyst for this in my opinion . I would say busting a 2nd place trophy is a pretty good catalyst for a softball team. I'm not condoning his actions but then again it's not for me to condone or condemn. If the team responds and plays better in the next few tournaments then maybe it was worth it. I doubt very seriously any player on the team was traumatized so much that they will have to see a psychologist over this. Just my opinion though. I could be wrong.

I seriously doubt that anyone on the team was harmed or traumatized seriously by this coach's actions, however, what happens if one of these girls does this in a couple of years. She saw a coach do it, therefore it's o.k. If she is removed from the team, then is she harmed? If a team loses a sponsor over something like this, is the girl then harmed? DD has not played for a coach that would put up with this for any reason for one minute - she'd be removed from the team before she left the field. Some people feel that if it works for the team and for them, then it's o.k. Therein lies the problem - it's the all about me or the team attitude that is so prevalent in sports these days. People do stupid things all the time but you try to minimize those when you are leading kids because as a coach you are setting an example. No matter how you look at it, this guy blew it and in our communication age, it gets around.

I believe that is the first time I've seen the "me" and the "team" attitude as the combined problem. Usually its the "me" attitude instead of the "team" attitude that is attacked. In sports, it is suppose to be about the team.

If your DD came in with a 2nd place trophy and destroyed it or just threw it away and said, "2nd place is not good enough. I am tired of placing 2nd. We WILL get 1st next time because 2nd place is the first loser".
What would you say to her? Would you tell her that 2nd is good enough and you should be proud to take 2nd in anything you do? What kind of message are YOU sending?
