Paid Coaches?

1. How do these paid coaches get paid? By the hour? What is the going rate?
2. How do you find one of these coaches (in Houston)? We have been looking for about a month or two with no luck so far. Any leads or suggestions?
3. What do the coaches expect in terms of control over the team? Do they make player decisions or simply run practices.

1. In our case, it was by the hour. I don't know what the rate was.

3. The team started out with the paid coach being the head coach, running practices and making all player decisions. That seemed to work. But some parents were unhappy with the coach, so a change was made. The paid coach ran practices and did not travel with the team, and dads managed the games. That was a disaster that lead to a total meltdown. Not saying that's what always will happen in that situation, just sharing.

One thing about high school coaches (in Texas)....I was told by a current high school coach that she had to turn down coaching offers because the girls on the teams were slated to go to her high school and it's a UIL violation due to the additional practices and tournaments. I couldn't tell you where it's written in stone.

I don't think that's a big issue in Indiana. I know of HS coaches that also coach travel teams that have at least a few of their HS players on the travel team. They can coach such a team as long as it's confined to a period from the end of the HS season to sometime in the early fall, maybe as early as the start of the school semester. I have heard that DD's HS forms a summer travel team of the previous year's freshmen to play a few local tournaments, and in fact they use the school name, mascot and colors.

I think it is a good idea to have a paid coach if they have experience playing at a collegiate \ national team level. They can relate well with the girls and bring game situtations they have experienced. However, you need to make sure they can also coach. Just because a person plays a sport at a high level it doesn't always mean they can teach it to others.

Has anyone who pays coaches had any problems with the IRS? I know when I typed up the IRS 1023 (Non-Profit application) they wanted a breakdown of who was going to be paid and how much. The folks at the IRS told me they will refuse the 1023 status to any sports team that pays any coaches, managers or staff. Maybe I should rethink the teams bylaws. LOL

The teams we have been associated with have never asked for the coaches to be paid. We were fortunate enough to have a coach volunteer for two years that did not have any daughters on the team. They did have daughters on teams within the organization but not on the team they were coaching. All the coaches ever asked for was reimbursement for hotel and travel costs for tournaments that their own daughters were not already attending. In other words, if their daughter was already going to Vegas to play and the team they were coaching was also going to Vegas, they did not ask for any reimbursement. On those occasions when reimbursement was necessary I thought it was well worth the extra $20 or so per tournament, considering the amount of time the coach had already given during practices and the comfort in knowing there was no Daddy Ball taking place.

One the team parents owned a business and used his accountant (who he paid out of his own pocket/business) to keep the team finances. I think if you're paying coaches, you need a financial professional to keep you out of trouble.
