I swear to God, the way some people talk about this hated game of ours, you make your kid punch a f time clock when they walk on the field. Its a game - it really is - dont let it turn into anything else. I have said it here many times -and its happened - I hear second hand that the girls that played for me say that our years together on the fields were the most fun times of their lives. What do yall's say ?
Donnie, Nice to hear your kid gets to play high level softball and still take time to do other things in life. Thats the way it should be. I remember telling a coach my DD wouldn't be at the games Saturday because of a school dance. He said thats fine she will have 100's of softball games in her life and only a few school dances in her life enjoy. But we expect to see her brite and early Sunday morning.
Parents should'nt worry about a players passing ahead of their DD when they take a break. Just remember the cream always rises to the top as long as you work hard , not over work.
Neither DD2 nor DD1 ever missed a prom, a homecoming dance, but they were snake bit when it came to Halloween - by far the most important showcase of the year, Ronald McDonald always happened to be on the night they wanted to be trick or treating. Guess what year, the dang day came in the middle of the week - this year - when they could have gone to parties or whatever. This year, up at school, I have NO DOUBT that they will be staying in studying, attending bible study or going to choir practice. We atttended lots of showcases over the years from Denver to Dallas to down here - but Ronald McDonald up in Houston was where everything happened for both girls.
The thing that worried me a lot over the years was DD2's volleyball - it started up in late August, and usually finished up in mid November. The thing that worried me about it was - that it worked - and worked very hard the same piece of her body that she used to pitch - her right shoulder. So she did take off from most of the travel ball - the fall ball stuff - but she was still working that shoulder. Maybe it was slightly different - but in my opinion, it really wasnt rest. Her little high school team would play during this period - this was the off- season team - that before our adventures started, I coached, but the last couple of years some local dads coached. They played a few round robins with area jucos and local travel teams, def not hard core. I wasnt around for a lot of the last two years for all of it - but she seasoned it ok.
A girl I thought was the best local talent we had ruined her shoulder because she was also a stud at vball - and didnt throw a pitch during vball - then when that season ended , jumped right into pitching again, the season was her junior year, and apparently her dad pushed her (he was a certifiable nut case) to pitch like nearly every game the first tournament. This would have been probably a thanksgiving or early december tournament - and that was all she wrote. That weekend - ended her chance at playing vball or softball at the next level. What DD2 and I noticed is that if she played a vball game with her high school team, almost for sure she was mush for pitching - so it gave the other pitcher on the h/s team some circle time.
