Other teams are calling about my daughter!!

My DD has been playing travel since 9. Burnout and injured, nah, every kid is different but we did play for the same coach for 5 years and to it keep it interesting it was time for a change this year. It was time to play for a Pete Carroll type and make it really fun!

As far as her 10U team, 11 girls with 6 verbals so far. I think 10 of the 11 will play college ball when it's all said and done.

I don't know guys, when my daughter was 10(she's 25 now) she wanted to play travel. I don't drive so I wanted to stay in rec ball. Same place every week. My husband worked for himself back then so he couldn't take her. My little nut, called around and tried to make her own arrangements. Her Rec ball all-star coach was taking the team travel and convince them all it was the only way to go.

I'm saying all this to say she wanted it. I wanted a pageant kid but hey, all 4 of daughters turn out to be softball players that's another story(the shame of it all lol), We didn't push her. We didn't have time too. It was hard enough to get her to clean her room and do her homework. But she would go in the backyard and practice on her own with her sisters. Even when her dad coach her we'd have to remind her that there was more to life than softball. To create friendships outside of the game as well as inside of the game. We let her play club volleyball, tennis(ok I made her do that I thought she could be the next Venus, she wasn't lol) and when she got older she went to play for Larry Mays. on Gordon's Panthers.

She played 4 years in college, then coached for 2 years. She just loved the game. Hey maybe my kid is just weird
So give this excited mommy a break, she'll figure it out. If she sit's back and lets her kid have fun on her travelbal team
it's not that much different if the parent doesn't put pressure on the child.

Come to think about it, there was one complaint my daughter had, NO SNACKS! lol She loved the REC BALL snacks!
My advice to excited mom is stay on the team that is drama free and her daughter is having a good time.
There are no scholarships, so wait another year before jumping to a high power team.

By the way don't ask these guys for advice, unless you have very thick skin and must of us don't when it comes to our kids

Love Love Love you advise! From one mom to another! And trust me.. I do not let none of this get to me. I am the supplying th efoundation for my DD, no one else! The ball is in her court. And right now, she is having the time of her life .. THank you so very much for your kind words!

Lots of anecdotal stories about ultimate successes for kids that played 10u TB. The kids in these stories would have done just as well had they not played TB until they were older 12u players.

Here's another story: A phenomenally talented kid won ASA National Championships at 10u, 12u, and 14u. She was the pitcher. I personally clocked her at 58mph at 10u on a Stalker. As a freshman in HS, she couldn't crack 54mph. Her HS coach pitched her a couple of games, but her elbow was virtually destroyed from overuse. A kid with boundless talent who couldn't play softball at all after her freshman year in HS. Her mom didn't have anybody warning her.

This post title makes me laugh every time I see it.

Sam is correct about the kids on that 10u team The Closer referenced. The biggest benefit they had on that team was the coaching. Coaching which few other 10u teams have ever had. However what The Closer doesnt mention is that the team roster swelled to 20 at one point their first 12u season. While half have verballed, the other half rarely played. But they did get solid coaching.

I am back once again coaching rec, which I love. However it was quite disheartening to hear the the rec league president tell a roomful of parents how lucky they are to live in SoCal where their kids "can play the sport they love 10 months out of 12".

The only thing worse was to watch a handful of 10u parents move on to travel with kids who are "too good to play rec". What these folks dont realize is that half of these kids cant even throw the ball correctly. They have jumped to bush league dad run "travel teams" that will fold in a year as the parents realize these newly minted travel coaches are the same ones who couldnt teach these kids basic sound mechanics in rec.

Good luck to your kid. Do her a favor though and dont tell her how good she is. Water seeks its own level and studs at 10 and 12 routinely get schooled at 14 by the kids who were still playing rec in 10s.
