Pitcher hit by line drive

What's on your mind?

by statmom » Fri May 01, 2009 11:13 am

My 7 yr old daughter was knocked out this past weekend by a fly ball. Hit her square on the nose. Luckily all she got was a bloody nose but it could have been a lot worse. Now just about every player on our team wants to wear the mask including my daughter.

All Right...Here I go...
Why not make every player wear a mask? Even the girls in the dug out...
Face masks are not a gaurantee. If you are throwing mid to upper 50's and catch a line drive in the chin because you did not get yourself in a good defensive position. Good Night! All because you were banking on the face mask to save you, and you were wrong. Now you have whip lash, broken jaw, and yes a broken face mask. They are a crutch. Just like elbow gaurds & ankle gaurds for batters. They wear'em and they dont move out of the way. They are more willing to take shots with them on. Get rid of them. If it is that dangerous for the girls then move the pitching distance back.

Yea I agree. Those masks won't stop a chin shot.

In fact batting helmets won't stop you from getting a shattered wrist either. Somebody burns a 65 MPH heater at your wrist what good is a helmet going to do? We should scrap helmets as well.

Solution,

Forget the batting helmets, face masks, batting gloves, knee pads, sliders. ASA just needs to put every girl in a full body nerf suit. Maybe they can rename the game to sumo ball and get it back into the Olympics.

To each their own.

I had a bucket dad, bloody his lip yesterday on a bad hop. I wear a game face and told him why. Then, he took DD out to the OF and lobbed her front toss. She is a big 10U, she lined one back at his face that hit the glove so hard that I thought it had hit him. He about peed his pants.

If I can't get the dads to wear one, I sure can't get the girls to.

On the issue of hot bats ... I'll have to look this up to make sure I am correct if someone doesn't beat me to it ... but last summer during a tequila session with my Bro-In-Law ... I believe he told me that in the NCAA Summer Baseball Leagues ... that all batters are required by rule to use the same bat ... his son was playing in the 'Northwoods League' ... It would seem that, if this is in fact true ... that it is the leagues way to put everyone on a level playing field ...Any thoughts ?

I believe that Bro in Law told me they were wood not alumberdum ... one of the farthest balls I ever hit in SP Softball was with a wood bat ...

Off the Northwoods web site:
The Northwoods League is an Summer Collegiate Baseball Association (SCBA) sanctioned summer baseball league comprised of teams of the top college players from across the nation and North America. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid (this preserves their NCAA eligibility).

Each team is operated similar to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions using wooden bats, minor league specification baseballs, experiencing overnight road trips, and playing nightly before fans in a stadium.

This is standard for summer baseball leagues which are breeding grounds for pro scouts. They want to see the hitters with wood in their hands. Some players struggle which is why the scouts prefer the wood bats, no surprises in the rookie leagues.
