How Young is too Young?

What's on your mind?

Would you wait for a study to limit your kid's time on video games?

If you are saying that the burnout occurs at 16's and 18's when the girls realize there are sacrifices in their social lives, then what difference would it make if they started TB at 10u or first yr. 12u? Don't the girls who start TB at 14u also discover a social life at 16's and 18's?

Just because your kid suffered an injury, allegedly due to overuse, that gives you the right to dictate to everyone else how their kid should proceed?

That video game analogy was so weak it does not deserve a response.

In the future, why don't you just state your opinion and leave it at that. Stop bashing everyone else who happens to disagree with you on a topic where there is no obvious right or wrong.

Not that Sam needs any help here because he can take care of it himself but give me a break....The OP asked for opinions and he gave it....If not for personal experience in life WTF else would there be.....Mine came from personal experience as well.....Until you've been on all sides and not just on a parents side I would hold judgement....

I too, have been a parent obviously as well as rec and current travel manager, VP of local Rec league for 2 years and coordinator for 2 years in Rec league as well, plus had a daughter with burn out issues.....IMHO that makes me qualified enough to answer a post that is asking a question as it would make Sam or anyone else that has been up through the ranks....

To question that his daughter was injured due to ALLEGED over use injuries implies that he is lying......How ridiculous!

Burnout occurs because they have never really had a social life. They play TB all year for 8-9 years. The 16U and 18U's are willing to balance the social life with softball if they have already had a social life. Many who haven't had a social life tip the scale totally to the social scene and quit softball.

Nobody knows who you are, buddy, but people know exactly who I am...I'm not anonymous....you can come up and talk to me about this stuff at the field if you like...you can even ask my DD about her injuries. Nobody knows your relative level of inexperience...but you would have the OP err on the side of hurting her DD. That speaks volumes to me and is why I just don't state my opinion and let you guy spew forth your toxic bile to unsuspecting posters who may be under the mistaken impression that you know what you are talking about.

The video game analogy was spot on and you didn't have an answer....I understand that.

SAM,

Your just a sour idiot. Give us your great opinions and insight from what happened 10 years ago with your kid and then blast everyone else like you are all knowing..
What a tool...Maybe you should finally wake up and stop snorting the apple butter.
College coaches start looking at kids in the 7th and 8th grade ..FACT
Talked to coach Myers just last week and his players..ALL of his players started playing tb at 12 or younger, most of them 8-10.
Your examples are idiotic just like " DAD" said. Don't start at 10 , because they will be burned out at 16. NO , better yet, start them at 12 so they will be burned out at 18 instead.??
Just as they get to college..? Makes perfect sense..!!
Obviously didn't work for you and you're just bitter. The whole idea of this post was to give a nice lady " REASONABLE" examples of the pros and cons of tb at an earlier age not just your blowhard high and mighty..
Your a moron...stick to what happened 10 years ago..keep living your life in the past..

Hotwheels,

If you were to go back and read this thread again, you would note that I said Sam should state his opinion. What I felt was inappropriate was for him to bash other people who did not agree with him.

As to my use of the word "alleged", how in the world do you twist that around to accuse me of implying that he was lying? Lying means a person is representing something which he knows to be false. I'm not saying that at all. I do not believe Sam was saying something that he knows to be false. Perhaps it really was overuse and nothing else. Perhaps her injury was attributable, in part, to faulty technique at one time or another, or failure to warm up or cool down properly, or simply how certain parts of her were constructed. Who knows for sure? A bit of an overreaction on your part on that one.

DAD,

Don't waste your time. SAM is a coach and his arogance is coming through my keyboard as we speak. Not interested in any opinion but his own. Instead of just stating some facts , and giving a well rounded opinion based on those facts , we just blast anyone that doesn't agree with him. The opinion on this subject can go either way , but not according to SAM. My daughter takes lessons from a 18 Gold coach and after talking to Clint, Casey and Corey Myers at ASU clinics , I now know that none of their opinions matter because a coach in Riverside has all the answers. To act like we , as parents didn't ask these questions ourselves before we made that decision..?
But no, SAM has ALL the answers and whatever he says goes..

Thanks, Fever.

He has some serious issues. We should pray for him.

Thank you, 10U Parent, for straightening this out for me.

Not everybody can play for Myers....in fact 99.99% of the 16U players in the nation don't actually play for Doug. So, again, if Wendy wants to listen to somebody who bases their opinion on what the elite of the elite do...then go right ahead.

My advise is reasonable...yours and others is dangerous...thats the difference...if you are wrong, a little girl gets hurt...if I'm wrong she's no worse off than she would have been and her family has a lot more money.

OBTW: Its actually "You're a moron"

The fact is, 10U Parent, that I have a lot of experience and I can call on the experience of others. I blast away on this particular topic because its idiots like you that can hurt kids. I know where you are coming from...I made the exact same arguments when people were telling me about overuse injuries in 2002.

Funny that you would ask people who never see overuse injuries about when to start a player in travel ball. The Myers, except Clint, are baseball people....so exactly what do they know about when to start a girl in travel softball? You would have been better off asking the Magic 8 Ball.

OBTW: I'm in Norco.
