2012s SATs

What's on your mind?

by Dugout Dad » Fri Jul 22, 2011 9:43 am

I currently have three 2012 players that are being recruited by Harvard and Dartmouth. They have started application process and both schools are taking the SAT AND/OR the ACT scores, whichever test equates to a higher score.

Get this, we have a girl on our team that wanted Ivy League. She is pulling a 4.0 in HS taking AP classes, but pulls a 1200 on her SAT. OUCH!!! I believe they are to embarrassed to Post it on the Profile Sheets being that they are the only 2012 w/o a SAT score on the profile sheet.

This is not the first time I have seen this, I have actually seen this 3 to 4 times in the last few years.

I'll take my DDs 3.3 GPA and her 1450 SAT anyday. SAT taken only once just to satisfy the College she will be attending in a few weeks.

Our 3 players have 1800+ SAT's and 30+ ACT's.

Schools accept the better of the two scores, which makes more students eligible, which gives admissions officers a broader spectrum of prospective students to choose from. Which is exactly what they like.

As for the GPA vs SAT/ACT scores, the tests are the Great Equalizer.

Some high schools routinely inflate grades, for any number of reasons. They are exposed when their students score poorly on the SAT/ACT, and can't get admitted to the prestigious universities. Or anywhere but Community College. The girl in 'duds example perfectly illustrates how these schools are failing their communities.

Other high schools are extremely rigorous, hence the students don't have inflated 4.5 GPAs, but they score very high on the tests. These are the kids who go to the top colleges.

College admissions officers know the difference.
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

When we lived in IL., my brainiac son went to U of Chicago, he needed a high ACT. My daughter then went to HS in AZ. and she only took the SAT. I like the ACT, because I can understand those numbers. :)

Sorry to enter the fray so late... but in the big picture (IMHO), study hard for both, take both, study more, retake both, move forward. My limited experience is that if you have (in this made-up, contrived scenario) 2150 SAT's and 19 ACT's... something is screwy. If a college/university is pondering your value and they see coincident, confirming relative SAT and ACT scores, it helps your chances. Nothing more. Nothing less.

The SAT and ACT are different tests based upon the judgments of different PHD's in the science of evaluation and measurement. The SAT, produced out of NJ, is a more traditional objective test measuring math, english, and writing. The writing component is new and controversial, but increasingly accepted by schools. The SAT can be superscored, which means a May math score can be added to a September english and writing score yielding a higher composite score. Most schools do this.

ACT is written in Iowa City Iowa. It was first accepted by the midwest schools. The ACT adds more math and the additional topic of science to the testing and it cannot be divided up for superscoring. If you are strong at Math and Science, you will mostly likely do better on the ACT. The ACT people say, you can't game our test while you can game the SAT. By that, they mean the testing prep services can predict questions more accurately on the SAT. The ACT people say, we test native intelligence.

Sit for two dates on each one unless you are happy with the score you get. My DD fought me on taking the ACT. She said SAT only, but eventually she broke down and even after a long evening district game on Friday, she went in and took the ACT and scored 250 higher than her SAT equivalent. Every coach she was talking to told her after she got the ACT score, you dont need to take anymore tests.

BTW Our high school offered free vouchers for the ACT. I have no idea where they got them.

One more thing. Colleges taking SAT scores often want SAT subject tests, a completely different test on subject of your choosing. Scored on the 800 model, these tests are hard and depend on your high school courses in the same subject. Great teachers produce kids with great SAT subject scores. Many ACT schools do not require SAT subject tests. But some do.

Here's a fact for you jonbovi...

SNAPSHOT: SAT
The SAT is the most widely taken college entrance examination.

...and from your own flawed research. Never mind that Kaplan will take your money however you want to spend it...SAT or ACT. Kaplan motto: "Sure....take both tests! Pay us and we'll help you take both!!! CC# number please..."

Now here's the story rookie...

If you want to waste your coin (and time) on the ACT and it's prep, feel free to do so. In the meanwhile, prepping for and mastering the SAT will satisfy ALL college entrance requirements.

When Harvard banned the ROTC...they landed on many P.O.S. lists...

...2300+ on the SAT and a fat wallet (or a prized pupil of affirmative action) will get you into Harvard...

If you're going there to play softball...I would only ask "why?"

Thanks Joe - you just proved to everyone how clueless you are.
