Wade ... as far as Blues at the Rec LL or Dixie level ... its what came first, the chicken or the egg ... I know the last year I Coached Rec the Blue came up to me and my partner and asked us to get on the Board and the treasurer ... he hadn't been paid for like 2 weeks ... and he knew the baseball Blues were paid up to date ... so much for the effects of Title IX ...

lol.. I doubt Title IX applies to LL (do they get funding?!?) and if it did, I doubt it affects umpire pay. :)

At least he's not a fan of the "Outsorcers", damn traitors who fill their rosters with overseas players and take roster spots from good wholesome American kids.

I had to laugh at the post about kids rolling the ball to first, I had a kid that did that in my first year coaching. We never coached her to do it, she just figured out that she had a better chance of getting the out that way. It was so embarassing, I used to say to her "that's nice that you got the girl out Suzie but try throwing the ball to 1st next time." I'd always get that "but why" look from her everytime I said that.

Yeah .. I was just offering the opinion that Boys sports are , in general, funded better and deemed more important ... as in ..." Make sure you pay the Baseball Blues but make the Fastpitch Blues wait for their money

I coached my 8 yo dd's 8u all star team last year. The coach who had his team rolling to first is the same one who threw a fit when mine was slapping. We had 10 7's and 2 8's. 1-11 record. That 1 win felt real good...wish had been against rolly polly!!

More on topic....I have coached both my girls. one is 11 and the other 8. They both play rec. The only reason I coach is because of the alternative..Their previous coaches sucked. Oldest dd's last coach was great...but he started a 14u travel team..what now?? I can't coach both..

I totally agree, without the parents the rec leagues couldn't function as they are needed to volunteer their time. This is where many coaches in travel ball begin which I think is a good start for anyone. Typically that coach is the parent of one of the better players in the league. Obviously the problem starts when that coach/parent says to Sally, "hey how would feel about playing year round?" Maybe they try playing on a team but Sally doesn't get much field time, maybe they go to several tryouts and Sally doesn't make the team. This is where coach/parent decides that he can coach and Sally would get to play all the time, er...if she is one of the best 9 that is
It's pretty basic and of course there are probably 100 other reasons for Daddy ball but the parent/coach should realize that once they hit travel ball, the best 9 have to be on the field. If Sally isn't one of those 9 and she plays all the time anyway, the team won't last long or at least won't perform well for very long.
My daughter is perfect, she knows everything. Just ask her.

In t-ball, something to look for is you see a coach telling the fielders to "roll" the f ball to 1st base

That would be progress for a few coaches around here. We play coed at that age, the coaches like to take their 2 fastest boys, have them flank each side of the rubber, then if the kid nearest first gets the ball, he outruns the kid going to first and tags him.

If they happen to make a few errors and let a few on, they kid nearest the 3rd base line tags the kid going home.

There's not much throwing or catching involved.

Not knowing any better, I got some of those RIF balls and told the kids to throw to first. I had a set of twins who could throw and catch and my youngest, who had been taught to throw by the mother/grandmother combo, plus my wife. My wife is the best I have seen at teaching young girls how to not "throw like a girl". She never really helped with coaching over the years but when I was working with youngsters like those, I would have her come out and help.

So I was really way ahead of the other teams and started having board members make a fuss about a) I was practicing too much and b) could they put their own kids on my team. This again was the t-ball age, which is 6u here. 8u here was and still is coach pitch. Kid pitching doesnt happen until 10u around here as far as I have kept up with it.

Just to touch on the volunteer thing again... the City here tries to run a Rec program through the "paid" Rec department without volunteers in key positions ... The employees leave at 4:30 when all Rec games are after 5 during the week or on Saturday ... well, it just doesn't work and they produce very few atheletes ... the County is all volunteer ... Moms & Dads ... not always run smoothly but 100% better than the City ...
