(And they don't do research themselves to learn it.). I've actually had coaches tell me "I've never heard of that" and promptly disregard skill-focused drills applied at UCLA, Arizona and Stanford. They fall back on conventional "wisdom" they picked up by hanging around baseball fields and batting cages. Hence, their infielders have inefficient glove skills, take poor paths to ground balls, and hitters have ineffective short games. Then they have short lives at nationals and on their way out say, "boy those CA teams can sure play..."
I have never seen a truer statement on HB than this.
I also enjoy listening to a coach talk about a player by saying, "She should know this by now, I'm not going back to teach it." Every skill should be covered at every practice. How many coaches still teach the art of base running? If you accept a player on your team, you accept her abilities and her shortcomings. How about making a plan for her, including her parents depending on age, so her shortcomings become assets.
You are probably good at your job, right? You do it everyday. Don't expect a girl to have a perfect slide, dive, or OF drop step because it should have been covered in 12U.
I could rant on this for a while, but the above poster said it much more tactfully than I ever could.
