Absolutely, school takes priority over softball. Can't fault parents for that at all.
Problem would be that if it is summer school, that time period is known well in advance and the information about that conflict should have been provided to the coaches from the very beginning (if it was not in this case) It was absolutely not fair (especially in a pitcher's case) not to give the team an opportunity to pick up another pitcher for qualifiers and to go to Nationals with the team if that family had no intention of going to begin with.
Bad form
Unfortunately for the kid, coaches in an area have a long memory for that kind of thing.
If the coaches were aware of this situation and failed to make provisions, that's on them. Don't know all the facts here either.
My sources at the Mavericks have this to say:
1) the kid was a prima donna who expected special treatment from day one,
2) she was clearly NOT the #1 pitcher and that did not sit well with her or her parents,
3) the dad was a jerk who was constantly getting in the face of the head coach,
4) head coach resigns late in the season to preserve some peace,
5) the parents pull the kid off the team after the team qualifies at the NQ in Clovis, and
6) there were no prior warnings from the family regarding summer school or financial concerns.
Those other kids on the team and their families worked hard to get their berth to Nationals. Time and money have been committed for travel plans. What this family did was unforgivable.
