It's funny how with so many things, if you're not "into it", you just don't understand "it".
As a young 'un, I had very little athletic support from my parents. They never went to play ball with me in the park or the backyard, rarely ever had them show up at a practice - even when I was about 10. Games were a sometimes-event for them, but only because they felt obligatd I suspect. For them, it was all about academics - no need to play sports... your brother is the athlete - not you. You should be an "A" student and quit wasting time on sports - you're too little - not good enough - (fill in whatever here) - I'd probably make a good episode on the Dr. Phil show !
Fast forward to today and now I'm in my 17th year of coaching and we're taking our daughter all over the state to TB games and have been doing so since the fall of her second year of 10's. My son plays baseball in HS and I follow him whenever I can. People think I'm one of those "helicopter parents" that hover, but honestly, I'm content to sit back and watch them practice, play, whatever. Can even do it from afar - I just like watching them. And what do MY parents say today? They're forever asking if my daughter wouldn't rather do something else - that she really just can't enjoy it that much. They think we're wasting our time and money chasing all over the west the way we do. She's an "A" student and she is very athletic - so I think they're pretty conflicted on how to react. Athletes just couldn't possibly also be "A" students... right???
Our friends all understand - after all... the only friends we have left are in softball and baseball !
Being from NorCal, what do I know anyway???
