Phew, refreshing honesty sans holier than thou "never been there and never done that but I saw it on Dr Phil" drivel.

I was the same way through 3! I never did know what the hell to do. Luckily they accidently turned out all right, despite my best efforts to ruin em.

DD could get pregnant next year after doing the entire football team on the 50-yard line. It won't make my point any less valid, or your anecdotal reasoning any more useful.

I'll be sure and keep you posted though.

lol. This exchange has now gone beyond surreal. Letting your kids listen to anything, watch anything, skip class, drink, screw, superman, and whatever are all fine. What's problematic is judging that choice. It is truly a world gone mad.

Curious how your criticism of my parenting approach isn't "holier than thou," whereas my criticism of yours is. How does that work exactly?

I'm up to 5 kids and here's what I've found about my parenting if I'm being honest. I'm getting more lax with each one

I was a bit over the top protective with the oldest (now 24). Where I'm at now is when they're in grade school or middle school, I'm going to be more aware of what CD's they buy (they don't get ipods at that age). By high school not so much.

I have two daughters in high school and take far more interest in what they do and how they spend their time than what they watch/listen to. They're both honor students and athletes with no boyfriends and have never been to a party not thrown by a mom or dad. I'll take that and live with my oldest's nose ring and "Superman that Ho" most likely being in her iPod.

Geez Louise ... I hope not ! ... I was thinking more like you catch her watching 'Dirty Dancing' or something ... Still not sure why you think we aren't nearly on the same page ... although Anonlooker sez we're not on the same planet ... Do you need a hug ? ... maybe more gin in your CoCoa Puffs ? anyway... Somewhere back there I said you were a good Dad ... really not trying to attack you, if that's the way it comes off ... we just difer on philosophy not on the results we are trying to achieve ... and no ... I still don't have an argument for why I would tell my kids to listen to Ho the Superman or whatever ... because I wouldn't :!:

Thats kind of what happened to me. As I got more time into it and seen as they come out the other side, I got a slightly different perspective that I guess some others just havent seen yet. Its all about foundation IMO. 13 + if they dont know and you still feel you must hammer their everymove, then you are stuck and you are in for it. You are only tricking yourself after that. I have some regrets about their younger years (probably too strict) but I was young and dumb myself trying to play dad.

My post didnt mention your name. You likely have a guilty conscience. I admire that fact that you do not allow your guilty conscience to detract from your all or nothing extremist ultra wack view points such as listening to rap = "screwing the football team". That's talent!

lol...I don't remember making that particular point, but it's nice to be recognized anyway.

Forgive me for assuming that you may have been referencing my "all or nothing extremist ultra wack view points" when you made your holier-than-thou comment. Whatever could I have been thinking?

I choose to not allow my kids to listen to music with overt sexual or debased content, because in my experience there is a very strong correlation between over-permissiveness and real-life risky conduct. That's my choice. You choose differently. Good for you. I never told you that you were ignorant. I never said that your day of redemption wouldn't be pretty. Because unlike you, I don't claim to have any idea about your life and your kids. Your decisions might work just fine for you.

My arguments have pertained to large numbers...probabilities. That's all. In general, allowing kids access to debased material--in effect mainstreaming that material--will lead to a higher probability of risky behavior. And suggestions by you and others that the choice is outcome-neutral (or worse, that such permissiveness leads to better outcomes) are farcical. Calling me ignorant, or an extremist, or holier-than-thou, doesn't shore up the weakness of your argument in the slightest. Tell me what benefit a young girl gets from listening to a song about men using ejaculate to humiliate a woman, or conversely, what harm is caused by parental prohibition of this. Then you will have at least made an argument.

Now, on to new topics before grammy starts rapping again. Ahhh, I know...Fresno festivities. After we're done beating the shit out of each other, let's tip a few, shall we?

Now there's an idea! Let's all get together in Fresno around the hotel pool and discuss this topic in greater detail while sipping perrier w/lime! :D :D
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.
