Playing travel during Rec. Ball

What's on your mind?

To be clear, it is SoCal ASA rules that restrict rec players from playing travel after March 31 or having more than 4 play travel after Feb 1. SoCal ASA has a responsibility to classify their players and they have drawn the line there to preserve the integrity of the rec level classification.

“B” Classification/League All‐Stars. This level of play is for recreation league only.

They just updated the rule to eliminate the 4 or more Feb 1st rule this year. Now players can play travel with as many their rec league players as they want to until March 31st. Not sure that is a good thing.

My DD started playing rec ball at age 10 & I checked the rule because she wanted to play with her friends from rec when she started travel 1st yr 14's(some will go to elitist schools too ;) )as a SoCal Dad I gotta tell you tbjd33 IMHO most SoCal travel parents are unrealistic in their expectations of their DD's. I've said it before, look at the numbers, approx 150,000+ seniors playing HS softball & only 4200ish slots available (& most of those were gone 2 years prior with 100% gone for the majors & mid majors).

Calling JR & Checkwriter elitist because they know softball lasts only 4 years past HS & an education lasts a lifetime is a shallow, uneducated imbecilic & unenlightened statement. But you're allowed your opinion.

Yes Berkeley is top ranked school but it's also 40,000 kids (bigger than 50% of the USA populations average town size of 25K peeps) while Stanford's undergrad population is around 7000. Quite a difference in school size.

Lastly the Ivy League & other respected institutions of higher learning on the East Coast are Elitist & they have been for 200+ years , when SoCal was just a pueblo Put that in your endloaded bat :D

Wow... How you can call an unenlightened, uneducated, imbecile and shallow is the exact description of elitist. Now, no one was called elitist, but instead they had made elitist comments. Do me/us all a favor and research (or google) what an elite at is.

I think it best you read thoroughly prior to judgement. Had you read before your screen or phone turned red do to true ignorance and closed minded attitude you would have understood my points.

Like you all are fifth graders... 1) my children have gone and are going to great institutions of higher learning. By default in our family choosing those institutions should tell you we value education, but I digress! 2) How many ways do I need to explain parents main focus is education and the $$$ it cost them. Many in this day and age do not have college savings to pay for college and student loans are never good unless desperate. Add the fact the majority of parents are not college educated themselves then the opportunity for ones DD attending a 4yr university free of charge is a step in the right direction for anyone... Or is that also unenlightened as well? 3) I'm tired of the one off examples, we all have them! The majority of kids playing any form of RecBall in ANY sport not just softball usually means they will fall behind in experience and skill development. I'm sure not many college recruiters will if ever frequent a "B" level game in any sport! Or is that concept uneducated?

Last, calling SoCal a Pueblo is racist code... I am American that happens to be Mexican by heritage, which also happens to be educated. So lob the grenades all you want, but please first read my post and think for yourself!

Oh and enrollment for Cal is just over 25 thousand. Smaller than Michigan, Pen St, Texas, UCLA and just over NYU. I may be newer to this forum but I'm pretty well versed in these topics... But I digress! LOL

This is a funny topic. I do agree that most parents in SoCal are focusing on the "Free Ride" until they realize it is a pipe dream. If everyone is so educated on the topic then they would know that there are not enough "Full Rides" for everyone. 90% of the kids playing D1 ball are paying to do so. We started my DD out playing ball at 7 just because the rule in my house is you have to be doing something not just sitting around. So she played and fell in love with it. Moved to travel ball at 10, Has won multiple National Championships and is fortunate enough to be going to college on a "Full scholorship".
That was not the plan, it just happened. I listen to so many folks around here saying "that is why we do this" "that is why we push our kid". They are missing the point. If I saved all the money I ever spent on softball my DD could have 4 years worth of tuition at a local state college. But that is not why we encouraged her. It was fun, it was something to do on the weekends as a family. Make no mistake even on a so called scholorship school isn't free. You will still be footing the bill for another 4 to 6 years for everything else she needs. It is about creating intelligent, productive individuals who understand how to handle group interaction, personal accomplishment, failure and overcome it and move on. Softball is so short and it is sad to see the way it is portrayed here in SoCal. Stand back and listen to yourself... My .02 :?

Thank you Dirtlover for a refreshing realistic answer & I tip my cap to your DD

tgjb33 I was just giving you my opinion of your statements, & I stand by them.

You are correct Cal has roughly 25,000+ undergrad & 10,000 grad students or over 36K total which is still larger than 50% of American Towns & I wasn't rounding up, I'll admit I was going on a statement from another...my bad.

You should be proud of your kids for their college acceptances, I sincerely hope they become happy well adjusted contributing members of society.

In 1850 LA's population was like 1600. Most of the Ivy League was founded prior to 1800 & Pueblo is not racist, it's historically factual. Google that Mr Dictionary.com. Furthermore my DD's proud of her Colombian/Mexican heritage, speaks fluent Castilian Spanish, but is also a member of the National Society of Children of the American Revolution("a service group that trains good citizens, develops leaders and promotes love of the United States of America and its heritage among young people." ), that makes her both the past & the future of our great Country. Now, the academic standards of many NE schools which you choose to call elitist, are just that, if you can't deal with that, go see a therapist or some kind of shrink to help you deal with it. Have & have nots are the way of the world brother & it's getting worse everyday. So next time you point your finger at someone, don't forget you got 3 more pointing back at you.

Your $$$ statement refers directly to my point of unrealistic parents chasing a brass ring they will never get. Or, as Dirtlover so accurately said "pipe dream". Look at the numbers & do the math, if it costs $3000 to $15,000 a year for travel ball for 6 years which includes outside lessons etc (Depending on the amount of travel, if you take the whole family & how many PGF tourneys your team chases to get to Nat's) add them all up & then compare them to a Cal State Education is $25,000 per year & considered by many in the country as a valuable education ...comparatively speaking. (My oldest DD goes to one & she loves it, it's perfect for her). Don't forget to mix in the softball equation of schools like Cal State Fullerton that has what, 26 on the roster & only 12 full scholarships (so don't tell me about "full ride" BS) Don't forget playing softball is a job at the majors & one of the biggest academic majors of players in the SEC is "Exercise Science" (what do they do for a career when softball is over?), then look at the number of players who play travel ball versus the number who move on to play college ball. When you separate the wheat from the shaft you got more than shattered dreams & a lack of savings for old age. The reason these folks you talk about don't have college savings is because they blew it all on Travel ball.

Just like all caring parents want better for their children than they had, I am no different. I'm not telling anybody how to raise their kids but from the guy who invented the pet rock to the entire cottage industry of people paying $25 per month to check their FICO scores 10 times a day so they can brag to people about a number that only counts for credit cards, & buying a house or car. Yes, there's a sucker born every minute.

I don't push my kid, never have, she's pretty good, loves the game & has a different softball resume than most but that's another thread.

ExD1 appreciate a well thought out post. Most post with knee jerk reaction, but I intentionally post from time to time to create dialogue and thought. That's what helps keep this forum interesting.

Still have more beef though... I never called East Coast schools elitist. I think it's a privalge to attend the Ivy's. As said before. Read the early post and the statements they are elitist comments. I'm sure none of them attended an Ivy so that would make those statement ignorant.

Last, it's not a pipe dream and it is sad someone would believe anyone's dream is a "pipe dream ". What the hell are we teaching our kids if we don't allow them to dream. I do agree parents get out of hand and don't see their DD for who they will become. As parents it's our job to foster growth while letting our DD know what the possibilities are... Atleast that what has worked in our house.

Trust me I'm a weirdo and actually have researched each school my DD is interested in and others I feel maybe a possibility, the years they recruit each position, dollars available, heck we go so far as to research average height and weight at each school. Some fit and some don't!

Yes there are 4500ish college spots available each year with about 450 of those at D1 and 150 at the softball factories and 6 spots for my daughter and her position at the 6 schools within her "pipe dream". So with that being said, my DD is shooting for 1% of 1% and I bet that will get a huge laugh from some of you out there!!!

But you know what? I will do all I can to help her out and speak the truth if I feel that pipe dream is out of reach.

Good stuff...
