You DID ask the Cali parents what they do in a typical practice...

I think you missed my meaning. I really want to know what is expected of your girls, away from the practice fields. Do you give them "homework", individually or as a group, or a written list of expectations? All of this stuff is foriegn to us, and its going to be a hard pill to swallow for many. I doubt we can get a program to model anything out there in CA immediately, but we can work towards it. Most parents I deal with still believe that as coach, I should be the one teaching them everything, and that if they are on a travel team, no extra instruction is needed. This is the analogy I want to draw with the parents: Lets say that your child is a drummer, and I am your neighbor with a child thats a guitarist. well, I was in HS band so I get em together to try and make a band. The time i spend with them is worthwhile, especially if I am keeping up with the music industry, but in no way can I replace a professional music insructor. That sound about right?

He didn't miss your meaning. It's not about what they do in a particular practice but what they do beyond that. That is what makes the difference.

This might be a tough nut to crack. I read an analogy about music that I used this year. I asked the parents to come out to where the girls were. I then asked the girls who played any muscial instruments. I had a couple that raised their hands. I then asked the parents how much time they spent practicing. Most of the response was at least an hour a day. I put out a question to the parents, what's the difference between learning the skills to play an instrument or the skills learning softball. Then I went on about team practice is just that...team practice. It's the time where we cover bunt defenses, defense situations, baserunning, batting. All the sub tasks that are involved should be mastered at home.
