Why is it so quiet at socal ballparks?

Good, I put this up here and gave the usual suspects time to pick the low hanging fruit. Ok we’ve had that fun. But now what about it, why so quiet? You go to a top shelf tourney up north it’s a different animal, it starts out with stretches where teams try to shout down the competition. The teams take the field another hardy cheer, the team that takes the field starts to chatter then home team lets loose with their first cheer and it’s on. If your team let’s up it’s usually a lost cause, it is perceived as a lack team spirit thing. But I find very little of this down south. Maybe my sample group of a couple of tournaments is to small. But it’s noticeable. So what is it, a perception thing, do people associated with elite teams want to appear aloof and detached? Do lower echelon teams cheer louder and have louder rooting sections? Or a class-ist thing travel ball up north is it more predominated by blue collar types and in so cal it’s more of a white collar game? Is your plumber or tradesmen and his fam going to scream louder for his that the corporate middle manager, CEO or dentist? I must admit I have met several MD’s involved in travel ball in the south this is nearly unheard of up north. Is this a new phenomenon or the way it’s always been? And lastly is loud good natured cheering and the like intimidating to players and there families?

My perception is that you don't need the cheers. In travel, most of these kids block out the cheering that the other team is doing and they only concentrate on what needs to be done in the warm up and on the field.

The girls may same some things to their team, but I haven't really heard any cheers to the other team in about 3 years.

Not sure that I have seen to many College or USA games where they are doing Pump Pump Pump It Up before the game. Haven't heard any of them do the I see a hole out there either.

Maybe it is the upper echelon so cal that we don't need to do all the rec ball cheering.

Not sure on the college game point, go to alot of college games up here Cal, Stanford, UOP, Sac st. D1 gals still cheer, maybe not the pump it up stuff but you still hear it. Stanford less than the other three. Point taken on USA is silent except a couple of hey kids, but viewer of the VT v USA game, when Angela shock the softball world I heard alot of cheers from the VT side. But the tone in the dugout is set by the coach and AZ dugouts are always quiet. Texas and Tennesee when I've seen them on the tube seem to cheer lustly though. Oh as for the rec ball thing, what do you know another piece of low hanging fruit was found.

I think it was Chuck Knox that I heard it from first.

or maybe its because alot of teams play so many friendlies down here, they become "desensitized"...i don't know...

To tell you the truth I'm glade our girls don't cheer, reminds me of Rec Ball......... and I think the girls down here in the south tend to stop doing cheers when they reach there teens anyway............

our girls still cheer, i think its cool...but for their own team, not to put down an opponent.
we constantly tell our girls and parents to represent our team with class and sportsmanship. i dont want anyone associated with my team to degrade an opponent or umpire.
believe me we still want to win, but we want to do it the right way.
If you are blaming an umpire on a loss, then you have bigger issues than a bad call.
