College Tryouts

Just a report from the D3 front lines ... Freshwoman DD did the Fall season and all the un-mandatory mandatory workouts/fund raising all Fall and Winter long ... put in extra time catching for one of the hurlers ... The Coaches had referred to her and a few others as "recruits" in the past as compared to others who had just showed up at the College and joined up ... Anyway ... The past week of try-outs has DD worried ... more than 30 have come out for the team compared to the 20 or so who were there previously ... she says a few of the gals were playing other sports but the rest of them she has never seen before ... and many quality players,, except for 2 who dropped out and one because of grades ... She isn't dwelling on it, but even I wonder where these gals were all year ... Final cuts tomorrow ...

That is interesting. If i was DD, I would ask them. Maybe say, "Hey, we haven't met. Were you at the fall workouts?"

Eh? ... she knows all the gals who were there for the Fall Season and tryouts ... most of those were there through the Fall and Winter with the exception of those that were committed to other sports ... ( volleyball & hockey in this case ) ... I suppose a couple could be transfers, but more than 10 at a small College is unlikely ... and when I say " never seen before " ... that means at work-outs etc. , not necessarily meaning never having seen them at school .... I'm just sort of wondering out-loud if Gals would hold off joining the team to get around all the fund raising and workouts ??????

I would want to know the answers to your questions and I would ask. I was just trying to think of a way to break the ice. If she can't ask the coach if these girls are responsible for fundraising, then i would ask the new girls, why they weren't there in the Fall.

Having been a small college coach, if 10 new players showed up in Jan. and I hadn't explained anything - I would have had 10 players from the Fall in my office demanding answers.

Good luck to your DD, but sounds to me like you didn't do your homework before she enrolled. And no offense, but if your DD was "recruited" at this school to play softball but now is worried about beating out 10 players or so out 30 trying out at a Div. III school, she probably should not be playing college softbally anyway and should be focusing on her studies. Frankly, this post caused you to lose a lot of credibility with me regarding some of your other posts.

G, one in every crowd. To me, your kid sounds like someone to be proud of, working hard, doing whats required, officially or not, ready to compete, sounds like getting ready for the real world.

Gimme a break . . . change only "Div. III" with "high school," and a newbie who posted would be crucified for this post. GIMNEPIWO and his DD obviously didn't ask enough questions of the coach before enrolling at this Div. III school as a "recruit" or during the fall season. This is college softball for christ's sake, even if it is Div. III. This coach has every right to bring in 20 new kids at mid-term and boot GIMNE's DD if its going to make the program better.

In most cases it's a good idea for a poster to establish their own credibility before calling out others. But having just read the entirety of your contributions to this board, you needn't bother. It won't help.
