Why do teams do this and get 20 kids at a tryout and just pick up a pitcher and a catcher?

No team ever really means what they say. They state all positions are open so that they get 20 kids at the tryout vs. no kids at their tryout. Even the Big Boy Gold Teams don't have open tryouts, nor does Myers' Batbusters...and he normally has between 60-80 kids trying out. Truth is he has already picked and recruited most of his lineup and he is looking for kids to fill out his roster. I'm not saying that its wrong...just the way it is...

Not only that, but they've all got their jersey numbers locked up too.

A coach really has to go through the headache of evealuating 60-80 kids just to pick op one or two to fill out his roster? You'd think there would be an easier way to do it than that.

One thing you have to remember too is that you may find that diamond in the rough or the girl that you didn't think was trying out for teams show up. Then you have an unexpected gift.

I think some teams that do this need to be straight up and say we are only looking for a pitcher.
I do see the up side to this if you have some players that are slacking and you have a ton of girls come out you can show them that they can be replaced at any time but you are really wasting peoples time in the process.

Are there coaches out there that recruit your dd out of the 60-80 and make promises and then your dd sits the bench? Just wondering since the try-out season has begun.

On the flip side, I saw many of girls showing up at try outs this weekend, when they "really" have no intentation of playing on that team as they are already commited to another team.

Some girls didn't even suit up, they just wanted to "check it out". SO, Coach may think he has 40 girls but really not the case!

for the most part when they say all positions are open they are unless its a team run by a bunch of dads then it should say all positions open except for where my DD plays.

unless i'm looking for a pitcher or Catcher i would post looking for a SS. If i want a good team to compete in Nationals I need 6 SS. Now can there parents handle there DD not playing SS but playing on a team that will compete that is a whole other issue.

I seen a couple of girls committed to other teams there just to workout what's up with that?
And SB you are correct when all the dads are the coaches I tend to stay away from those teams as much as possible but that's the majority of the teams out there.
