Have enjoyed watching the internet updates, stats, etc... - Loved the game so far tonite on ESPNU. But how the heck does temp fencing make its way into the champ game? How can the ump decide that if there were perm fencing that was a HR? Very disappointing.

With the NFHS rule set, the ruling seemed to be correct.

other rule sets (ASA), its an out (if the catch was ruled 'inplay')

If she would have hurdled the fence and caught the ball, then I'd go with a HR, but she didn't hurdle that fence, she caught it in play. That's an out. And what is the rule book they are going by? Because I don't know the rule either.

I think it was an out, from what I read in ASA rules.

Rule 1 - Catch -
C. The fielder's feet must be within the field of play, touching the "out of play" line or in the air after leaving live ball territory in order to have a valid catch. A player who is "out of play" and returns must have both feet touching the playable area or one foot touching and the other in the air, before the catch is legal.

Reading this rule and the others, IMHO, the ball was in her glove right before her feet hit the fence.

prior to the game the ESPN dudettes said it was under NFHS rule set. (but who knows, when it comes to ESPN commentators. they are clueless for the most part when it comes to rules)

under the NFHS rule set, it was pretty clear that it was an HR.

(and btw, you interpretation of 'hurdling the fence' as long as she her feet left from 'in play', and the catch was made prior to 'landing', would be an out on ASA is 'correct')

No matter what the call was, that was one of the best efforts made to catch a ball I've seen in a long time. Her parents and coaches should be very proud of that. She was willing to give herself up to catch that ball. Great job.

I agree. Now that's a kid leaving it all on the field.
She took the saying "go through a wall" literally.
