Icing after the game - on the road...

What's on your mind?

by softballfan33 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 8:18 pm

Before this year, this was never a problem. Most of our games/tournaments/friendlies were local and so icing knees, shoulders, etc post game was fairly simple. Go home and put on the sleeve/knee wrap, etc. This year we have been on the road pretty much every weekend and hotel minifridges just aren't made to keep DD arm sleeve, knee wrap etc cold. They don't stay frozen in the ice chest either. Tried the ziplock thing and it just falls forward or backward under the ace wrap. Does anyone have any cool/neat tricks for getting the job done with the limited resources that you would have on the road? Figured someone has some great trick I can use. Thanks in advance (thanks from the DD also).

We bought a 4" roll of stretch wrap at a shipping store. It is the perfect size to wrap DD's shoulder. I get 3 small zip lock bags and fill them with ice -squeeze out the air. I put 1 on the front of the shoulder and one on the back (she holds those in place) then 1 on her upper arm. She holds the end of the wrap in the right hand, I hold the 3rd bag and start wrapping it goes very quickly and does not slip.

My kid has been using the Total Ice Therapy shoulder wrap since last year.
It uses real ice, and we usually have enough left in the ice chest for the ride home.
It has a cloth exterior/rubber interior ice bag with a screw on cap, a neoprene sleeve the bag fits in, and velcro straps to hold it in place on her shoulder.
It's really light, folds up very small when empty, and doesn't take up much room in a suitcase or backpack.

We haven't had any issues getting ice if we don't have any.
If we are at a friendly or tournament, she gets ice from the snack bar.
If we stop to eat on the way home, she asks the waitress/waiter to fill it with ice at the restaurant.

Works great and I highly recommend it.

All you need is a thick freezer ziplock bag and some ice from the hotel ice machine. For younger girls it can be a bit of a pain to have them keep it on.

If you have to get fancy, get one of these:

Available at any pharmacy.

You can also ice anytime, just stop by a mini mart and ask for a bag of ice for you kids shoulder. They have always been more than happy to help out. Those bags can leak over time, but should be able to give you the necessary 20 minutes, when in a pinch.

I agree that these methods work, and my kid used all of them at one time or another for the last few years.
But it was always a struggle to get her to do it, or she would want to wait until we got home.
After seeing my kid use the total ice therapy for the last 6-8 months, it was $30 very well spent.
It comes with an ice bag like in your picture, with a cloth exterior, so it feels ok on her skin. It has a fat screw on cap that doesn't leak.
The neoprine sleeve with the velcro straps make it easy for her to position it where it needs to be, and it stays in place.
Perfect for her to put on and fall alsleep on the drive home, without worrying about the bag leaking.
If we stop and eat somewhere, she wears it in the restaurant, and it stays in place.
In my opinion, it's just one of those products that works perfectly.

They also have a model for your knee and lower back. I agree, the shoulder model works great.

Thanks, think I will be ordering one tonight. We did the ziplock thing with ace bandage, but it always seemed to leak everywhere and she was lying in a pool of water by the time we drove home (after falling asleep on the ride). My other DD catches and we do her knee so will try that one out as well. Thanks very much for the recs.

Its not a good idea to fall asleep with ice on. It is only recommended for 20-25 minutes.

You're correct, and sometimes I have to wake her and she takes it off after 20-30 minutes.

One other option is not to ice. I was religious about icing my kid for years and it was a major pain for any of a number of reasons. Recently, I have come to understand that several very successful pitchers do not ice. That still was not enough to get me off the ice kick but a visit to our sports doctor for another reason led to a discussion on icing. I won't drop names but this fellow is highly reputable and his lobby is replete with photos of high-profile athletes with whom he works. His take on ice is not to apply it unless there is an injury. If the player is experiencing unreasonable pain she should see the doctor and then the ice therapy comes into play. Anyone who knows me is aware of my fanaticism with icing but now we haven't iced for about six months with no untoward effects.
