Lightening strike kills boy

I learned on another site, that the umpire had cleared the field because of the storm, but the parents were letting 2 boys play catch. One was killed, the other one is hospitalized.

Yeah ... very sad ... we often have serious lightning in VA. ... when we moved here from NJ one of the first things I noticed was how low the clouds and lightning are during storms ... not too many twisters, probably more 'downbursts' ... I was hit August 19th, 1991 along with my oldest DD ... which may explain some things ... but in researching afterwards I found out that lightning strikes are not very good killers ... thankfully in our case, but so sad for this boy and his family ...

Very sad..great job by blue to call the game...people don't realize that lightning can travel for 10 miles..first sign of lightning, time to get shelter..and Tucson you know about those monsoon thunderstorms rolling through..?
Won't catch me or the family outside...even if they are off in the distance..and a ballfield..?

When DD and I were hit ... a T-storm was moving in but was way far off, or so we thought .. and it was just barely starting to drizzle ... as witnessed by two other DD's who said the lightning bolt came over the trees and a 3 acre field behind the house, was traveling sideways to the ground hit me from behind , my DD who was facing me, the tree we were standing near and continued down the hill next to the house and across the pond ... they were little, but interviewed seperately and both gave the same account ... My mate was pregnant with the Zacklies and bush hogging on the tractor heading back to the house ... she didn't see the strike but heard the clap of the thunder and looked to see me spinning like a top across the back yard .... after reading about lightning I deduced that we may have been hit by a spike actually coming up from the roots of the tree ... at 567,000 miles per second it didn't stick around long and was difficult to outrun... high voltage & low amperage is the reason it is not a very consistant killer I believe ...
