Question On Torn ACL

What's on your mind?

by hotwheels » Fri Feb 13, 2009 10:09 am

I have a girl on my 16U team that just turned 13 years old who was recently given her MRI results showing a torn ACL in her right knee......Does anybody have experience with their DD's with this injury or personal experience of what kind of recovery time she is looking at....Her doctor has told her anywhere from 4 to 8 months before she is back to normal.....

I have had 2 torn miniscus' myself and know how damaging a knee injury can be but really don't have much experience with a torn ACL....Never had anybody on my team with one....First time for everything....

I feel bad for her....She is devastated by this news!.....Just curious if the 4 to 8 months sounds about right......I know she will have a recovery time and then have to do re-hab......Any input will be appreciated!

I had a torn miniscus and ACL replacement. 4-8 months sounds about right. She is young though...could bounce back between the 4-6 month time period. Good luck to her.

Tore my ACL years ago. It is very painful and takes about 6-9 months to heal. Lots of PT. And I still have trouble with it. Forget about her and let her recover. Do not let her show up this summer in a brace and convince you she's fine. If it doesn't heal properly she'll be done permanently. The link will give you details.

Repairs are now done much better than they used to be. The recovery is faster and more complete. That said, ETX is right on the money about making sure she's fully recovered before playing again. Sounds like she's got a long career ahead of her - no sense jeopardizing it to come back 1-2 months early.

Yes...make sure she is fully recovered before she gets back out there and she takes her rehab/PT seriously. It makes a big difference.

If she wants to stay involved, hand her the score book ...

DD tore her ACL last summer. She did pre-hab (really helped to strengthen muscles) to prepare her for surgery and had it repaired on Aug. 4th 08 with the hamstring graph. She is just now getting back to normal. Lots of re-hab and make sure she does the work at home also. DD wears a brace now and is starting to catch some again in short increments.

Good luck to your DD

I also had a completely severed ACL. I did pre hab before surgery, and had the hamstring graph. It took me 6 months before I was released by the doctor, I was a freshman playing college ball at the time. My reconstructed knee is ten times better than my other knee. Its alot of hard work, and be careful, because the mental part was harder than the physical part. I tried to baby the knee for fear of reinjuring my knee. It was always in the back of mind. Good luck and hope your players back on the field soon.
