coaches training and certifications

What's on your mind?

by crzykarp » Sun Jun 14, 2015 5:54 am

I have been coaching travel softball for 13 years(all age levels). Additionally a couple years at the high school level.
I have coached my daughter but this is about much more than that.
I would like to coach at the college level if the opportunity ever comes up.
I am looking for a coaching certification or training program to advance my skills.
I believe a to be the best coach i can be(for my athletes) i should never stop trying to learn more.
Any help is appreciated.

many states have state certification- usually needed to coach hs etc.. I also know other organizations(babe ruth, little league etc) also have their own cert programs. as far as coaching in college- be prepared for a pay cut :D You will be shocked at the low level of pay for asst coaches and even head coaches at all but a handful of schools

1 - Consider coaching a HS. For me it is easier to transition from HS to college than TB to college. TB you typically learn more competitive coaching. HS you learn more to win with with what you got and that school based softball calendar has a lot of challenges.
2 - I think from HS coach you can join NFCA. Join it. Sign up to go to NFCA Convention. https://nfca.org/index.php/convention Pay for it yourself, or tell the HS you will coach if they cover the trip.

That is probably your best place to meet a wide array of college coaches. Talk to people about becoming an assistant at a smaller local college or JC.

NFCA used to have a great travelling convention they did. They brought in the hot coaches of the time Candrea, Enquist etc. It was a really great chance to meet people.
