Faster:
Gee I hate hearing these stories, but seems like this is very common. Especially taking advantage of 10/12u newbie to travel parents/kids.
The only thing I would say for future parents starting travel is:
Its important that you understand the financial obligations upfront and I believe it is an ASA requirement that they have to present you a budget, which should indicate requirements for gear/start up fees.
My daughter has only played for several organizations that required the Uni to be returned - was known upfront and typically required a deposit and also several that let you keep the Uni. Start-up fee made it clear that you were buying the uniform top and most of the times the pants.
As far as helmet and all accessories, these were always kept by the player and considered personal items. (Evidenced by the 10+ helmets I have in the garage).
Any time an organization wants you to buy to many sets of new uniforms - I would run. Otherwise your probably playing for a sponsored team and they supply the uniforms for free.
Sometimes the President is more worried about trying to project the brand of his organization than scaling back the costs to the parents. Beware of these organization and make sure this is a team/organization you feel your kid will truly grow with. Otherwise you will be like most of us TB Parents whose kid has to switch teams every season!!
Her current team switched to a new organization and this is what was required to give you an indication:
1. We returned the uniform tops of the old org. (were never required to pay for them)
2. Had to buy new Schutt helmet to match org. color scheme requirements - Cost approx $45
3. 2 Practice T-shirts $6 each with team name
4. Used old pants (Black) piping of white or red did not matter
5. Coach requested if need to buy new cleats, then get red or black otherwise ok to keep using old cleats.
6. Uniform tops - we play in So Cal. Ordered 2 set of lightweight rayon material uniform $25 each. We also use practice T-shirts for friendlies.
7. Bags - just use your existing ones, by 18u everyone has 5+ equipment bags anyways.
8. Socks 2 pairs for about $16
9. Visors or headbands - only ordered if the girls wanted.
10. Sweatshirts/jackets - only if you wanted.
The Coach is focused on keeping costs down, as tournament fees have skyrocketed! Then add travel expense to Colorado etc. And it gets crazy!
Monthly fees stayed the same!!
