Try Out Fees?

1:00pm Sunday, August 12th- Shootout 14U tryouts @ Sequoyah-Claremore High School. Non-refundable tryout fee of $25.00 will be collected at the beginning of the tryout. The 14U team will play ASA "A" qualifiers and Nationals and will go to Kansas City Memorial Day Tournament and Colorado Freedom Tournament over 4th of July.

1:00pm Sunday, August 26th- Shootout 16U and 18Gold tryouts will be held together. Tryouts will be held at Sequoyah-Claremore High School. Non-refundable tryout fee of $50.00 will be collected at the beginning of the tryout. The 16U team will play ASA "A" qualifiers and Nationals and will go to Kansas City Memorial Day Showcase, Team New Jersey Showcase, American Freedom Showcase in Allen, TX, Colorado Showcase, and either Las Vegas or Chicago Showcase tournaments. This team will be travelling a lot during the months of June and July. The 18Gold team will play ASA Gold qualifiers and Nationals and will compete in Boulder Independence Day Tourn., ESPN Sun Classic in Florida, KC Memorial Day Showcase, American Freedom Showcase Tournament.

Is this common practice in California or Texas?
I guess by charging you know the players are really interested in your team/org.

They are preying on the gullible and uninitiated. Welcome to youth sports, and travel ball in particular. It doesn't stop there, tryouts are just the beginning. They'd be doing you a favor by not choosing your daughter.

I have heard many stories of CA teams charging upwards of 2000.00 for a tryout.
All nonsense but they persist.

Shhhhh! This is a double secret SoCal joke on the rest of the country.

We're currently debating whether to raise the amount to further test the upper bounds of their gullibility or lower it because of the economy.

I was at a team website where they charged $25 if you signed up for tryouts early, $35 if you did regular, but you got a shirt, a dvd about collegiate softball, etc. if you registered. I almost did it myself just to get the dvd.

I can't see charging a tryout fee unless you have a team whose turnout will warrant it.

We are having 23U tryouts in RICHMOND, VA this coming weekend , we will waive the fee if you pitch, catch or play short, congratulations - you made the team ... I'll send you the schedule ... LMAO

When the legitimate, non weeded-out players show up do they explain that it was just a ruse and not charge them?
