Best way to take softball gear on a plane?

We've been doing it for years and we usually use the equipment bag as a suitcase and pretty much jam that thing in and get close to the 50lbs mark. I usually wrap the bat with a beach towel and tape it and I've never had one get damaged. Glove, cleats and uniform always gets carried on just in case we lose the equipment bag.

We have been putting hard cardboard tubes the length of the bat inside the bat bag. Never a problem. If you use PVC it will shatter, but after three years the thick cardboard like tubes are still like new. If she drops her bag on the ground it will protect them as well. They just stay in the bag now. She ALWAYS packs her uniform, glove, and cleats. The metal cleats have never been an issue at security, just smelly, lol. Bag was lost once and had to buy new cleats at an exposure tournament with seven games in 3 days.....the blisters were bad....JMO
