HS is what it is. If you accept that and learn to enjoy the game and smile a lot it can be a great experience. You fight it, you will find your self white knuckle clung to the backstop barking random things at your kid while she slumps to .050 batting average.

I had always thought it would have been great if there were "official" scorekeepers for HS games- some local reporter, school official etc... Always hated that there were always at least two books being kept(often different)

I am trying something new this year ... I started with 3, but now I am down to 2 sets of books being kept ... One set is kept by one of the pitchers parents, the other by a position players parent ... So far, so good ... The scoring has been remarkably similar ... But I haven't made the ERA's & BA's public yet and there are still 6 games to go

My daughter made varsity as a freshman, then got hurt the first day. She has coped by saying she is the starting scorekeeper. She is a pitcher, but has kept a remarkable unbiased book IMHO.

I find that the players not on the field are the most objective.

When I was scorekeeping for my DD's HS games, I would approach the opposing team's scorekeeper during the game AND at the end of the game to compare notes. If we disagreed on a given play, we'd try to talk sense into the other. I found that most scorekeepers took pride in their work and wanted to be unbiased. Some didn't understand about FCs or SACs. The home scorekeeper won any ultimate disagreements. Worked out pretty good ... no surprises in the morning paper about stats posted by the opposing team. Plus, you meet some nice people who share your scorekeeping interest!
