To the generic question about the generic injury, I offer a generic response in the form of "what happened to us...":
DD hits a solid double at a Surf City Tourney 3 years ago. She heads towards second, short (big girl) comes in and, without the ball, flagrantly blocks the bag, full knees down, full body block. Short version: two broken metacarpels. A bogus, idiotic play by an incompetent SS on a chump change team.
Off to the doc-in-a-box, xrays show major breaks, titanium hardware installed 5 days later. But the end result: an incredible facination with orthopedic surgery, now a pre-med major, and rotated from right hand to a left handed slapper (what she now plays in college).
Was her injury preventable and unfortunate? Yes. But it wasn't the end of the world for her. However, all situations are different, all injuries different, but it's interesting that many times one door closes and another opens.
I hope all goes very well with your daughter. Enjoy in good health. Best of luck and I hope luck has nothing to do with it.
Best...
