Very rarely do I have a player straddling a base waiting for a throw. It kind of "locks" them into a position, before they even know where throw is going to be. Should they have to shift to catch the ball, they would then have to contend with the base under their feet and possibly a pair of cleats sliding into their ankles. 3rd base taking a throw from right field might be the exception.
Catch the ball, and bring it to the bag.

So I take that to mean inside the base line at home and 2nd. Correct?

It ALWAYS depends where the throw is coming from ... So, yes & no ... You wouldn't want them 'inside the base line' if the throw was coming from 'outside the base line' ... Think too about the momentum of the thrown ball hitting the glove ... Would it be easier to catch the ball and make a tag letting the momentum of the ball help move the glove towards the base runner or catch a ball and then have to change the direction of the momentum and lunge /stab with the glove ?

In almost every case ... exceptions that come to mind would be F5, F6 or F7 throwing to F2 from foul ground ...
